Help: On Deck Racing and/or St John

Ok, I really want to go to St John this time. We've been to St Thomas twice and love the Virgin Islands. I don't feel like I need to spend any time on St Thomas this time though and I'm not that interested in shopping.

 

So here is my delima, I think my DH and DS (12) would absolutely love to do the Racing. We could do the morning race and be done by 11:30 leaving the rest of the day to do a beach. Do you think there would be enough time to take a ferry to Cruz Bay to at least experience some of St John. We would need to be back on to the boat at 5:30 for a 6:00 sailing.
