Seems like one of the best things to do on catalina is rent a golf cart and tour the island, how much do the carts cost? how long can you rent them for? how long does it take to do a tour with the carts? any other info you may have is always welcome thanks

The last I heard the golf carts were restricted to Avalon (1 mile square). You can go up to the Wrigley Mansion in one (which is a pretty good hike otherwise). To see the rest of the island I think you need a car, jeep, Hummer cab, bike or bus. you must also get a permit (on site, not available on-line or by phone) from the Catalina Island Conservancy for any independent travel on the island outside of Avalon. You may want to stick with a tour to see the rest of the island.

We really enjoyed a ride on the Avalon Trolley for $3.00 each. (Prices may have increased since our visit.)

The trolley travels between Descanso Beach (the Casino), Downtown, Pebbly Beach and the Wrigley Memorial Garden, with numerous stops along the way.

It's not exactly a 'tour' but it covers a lot of territory. See the route map here.

As for renting a Golf Cart, my recollection is that we noticed one place listing a fare of $30/hour with a two hour minimum, and another with a one hour rental for $40. As posted above, the areas that you can visit in the cart are limited.

As for downtown Avalon, it's quite small, completely flat, and easily walkable.

We decided on the trolley and walking.

p.s. There's a Von's Supermarket right downtown that has a good selection of beer, wine and liquor (as well as everything else a supermarket carries) if you're interested. Try this link, then click Store Locator near the bottom and look for zipcode 90704.
