Dominica shore excursions

we'll be in Dominica -in a few weeks-we are on the 11/17 volendam cruise..I've been to the island a few times and have already taken the Carib Territory tour and a few of the other tours also..I love the island.. but this time we want to see something new..we are thinking of the tram .but wondered if there is any other way to go there beside the HALex..has anyone just taken a taxi there? can you wait till the island to do this.. when we were there last we just grabbed a cab driver = who took us to the falls.. he was great.. but since the tram is a bit further away.. we wondered if we should stick to the ship tour.. but is is so expenisive.. so any suggestions would be welcome..
