AARRGGGHH! Isnt there any new info on repairs? We are booked 12/9 are very nervous about not being able to make it to the excursions.

Hi Rose,

We are going to be on the same cruise and I too have been worried about the crank shaft problem affecting the excursions I have scheduled since they are not through the ship.

I will be traveling with a large family group for my parent's 55th wedding anniversary. Most of the family, practically all them have never taken a cruise so I hope that everything is all fixed for our cruise as everyone is very excited!!

See you in a few weeks!!!:D

Really? That's weird.

Cruise News Daily is reporting that the repairs were completed before the ship left Bermuda on Thursday. Wish I knew what the real story is.

Maybe one of the CC clan who came back yesterday will give us a report. Anyone? Bueller? :)

For what it's worth, just wanted to pass on that I was on the 10/28 Majesty sailing out of Charleston and the ship did arrive late that day, but it was because of really bad weather. We made it to Bermuda on time even though we left a little late, so apparently the engine problem occured sometime after we left Bermuda on 11/2. I am sorry for everyone who's vacation was impacted, but I really do think it happened spontaneously. Hopefully now it's all under control!

Since you're from Charleston, I'm looking for a hotel fairly close to the port the night before our cruise. Any suggestions? We live in the mountains of NC so I'd rather not drive down Saturday morning.

If I lived there I'd cruise all the time. :o

There are tons of hotels close by. There is a beautiful one called the Harbor View Inn that is just lovely and you can actually watch the Majesty sail in and dock basically right in front of you. There is a parking garage right behind the hotel, and maybe they offer a special deal for cruisers who need to park the whole week? It may be a little pricey, so if you want something a little more economical you could check with the Days Inn that is on Meeting St. It's pretty close too. I am from Rutherfordton so I know the NC mountains pretty well! =) Have fun on your cruise, you will love it and definitely contact the Charleston CVB.

Thanks for the help! I'll check both of those out. This is our second time on the Majesty. We love her. :)

We live in Linville and it's snowing today. ;)

Heelfan--- go over to the ports of call board, or look at some of my posts. There are a bunch of us staying at the Radisson airport. It's a bit out of town but reasonable-- plus free shuttle to and from ship and you can park for free during their cruise.

Thanks for the tip! Will they be there on the morning we come back, or do we need to call for the shuttle? It would save a lot of money. :)

Not really sure how it works, but I've heard nothing but good things. I know the cruise we are scheduled for (new years) there are at least 6 or 8 staying there. My guess is they will have a set time for pick up and make as many trips as needed.

I'm sure you're right. If we do park and ride the shuttle over, we might get a taxi back which would still be cheaper than leaving a car the whole week at the pier. It'll be Dec. 23 when we get back and I'll need to get home quickly for Christmas / family stuff. :)

Update-

An article in today's Post & Courier (local Charleston newspaper) confirmed that the Majesty's engine problem was repaired while in Bermuday on Thursday. It also had some pretty snarky comments from passengers about how poorly it was handled, and one who called the ship a rusty old tub! At least the author of the article did include that NCL was pretty much in a no-win situation. Cancel the cruise= ticked off passengers, Go ahead and sail with a shortened stay in Bermuda=ticked off passengers.

Not only that, but I'll bet the food was awful, the service poor, the entertainment bad, and the beds too hard.

Apparently what we got here is a failure to communicate. :p

NCL has reported to local papers and online travel sites that the repairs are finsihed. Now NCL's shore excursion desk is saying the repairs have not been completed????

That's par for the course for any cruise line. The land side people never know what's going on. Poor training. One would think that there would be memos or a 5 minjutes meeting before a shift to get every one on the same page.

We just returned from the Majesty Thanksgiving sailing (Nov 18- 25). Before we boarded the ship we were given a letter stating that although the repairs were completed the ship could only gradually return to full speed. This meant that the itinerary had to be changed. This was disapointing to all because the times were not ideal: Key West early Monday morning, Cozumel Tues, and Grand Cayman on Wednesday. For compensation they were offering $50 OBC and a free one hour of cocktails.

It turned out that we got to Key West about an hour late and were only scheduled to be there from 7AM-1PM I believe. On Wednesday we were supposed to arrive in Cozumel at 10 AM...but at about 9:15 we were informed that we would not arrive until 2 PM and would be staying until 6 PM. Shortly we were informed that we would actually stay until 11:30 PM but because of rough seas we would not make it to Grand Cayman at all. Instead we had another day in Cozumel on Wednesday. (We had to go out of the 12 mile zone during the night to dump gray water). Because we were so late to Cozumel all of the shore excursions were cancelled and they rescheduled some of them for Wednesday. However, many of the big tours (Tulum, scuba, etc.) were still cancelled. They extended another $50 OBC and gave us %15 of the amount we spent on this cruise for a future cruise.

Overall we were very disapointed with the cruise itinerary changes and wonder how much of it was due to the engine problems. The weather also caused problems. We did not let this ruin our trip although many people did. It was our first cruise and we heard a lot of people say it was the worst cruise they had ever been on, etc.

It was absolutely frustrating but we very much enjoyed the food and the outstanding crew! Overall we had a good time but thought that the $100 OBC was not sufficient compensation...especially since we ended up having our excursions cancelled so had to blow the money on t-shirts, etc. that we really didn't need.

I think by the end of the cruise we were pretty much running at full speed but the weather was then causing problems. Yikes!

I hope things are back to normal in three weeks. This is one of my favorite itineraries when it runs on schedule. Sorry yours wasn't quite right. :)

cancelled ports are common, and on every cruise that I have had with a canceled port, there was no compensation, just an extra day at sea. If you want to see an interrupted cruise, check out the Dawn threads from last week:eek:, and you will see how good this cruise really was. As I said before, cancelled ports are common, they could have just left cozumel, and given you more time at sea, so they could make more in the casino, bingo, drinks, and gift shops.:)

I do realize what happened on our cruise was very minor compared to the problems on the Dawn. As I said we were still able to enjoy our cruise although many fellow passengers did not (a combination of the changed itinarary and rough seas causing a lot of seasickness).

The compensation was provided not because the port was cancelled, but because of the itinarary changes due to the engine having to be slowly ramped up. The way the crew explained it was that in combination with the weather we just weren't able to go fast enough to make the scheduled itinerary.

I didn't mean to whine...just wanted to give an update on what happened on the Majesty last week.
