stbmom Posted November 18, 2006 #1 Share Posted November 18, 2006 We are crusing with our one year old in 3 weeks - yay. We wanted to take some toys for him to play with - just a couple of new things to keep him occupied. We will probably ship them (thus my other post) and have them waiting for us at our hotel. Of course, we don't necessarily want to lug them back with us and we are thinking about either donating them to the ship (for their baby sitting service maybe) or giving them to members of the crew to send back to their kids. Any idea on if the ship will let us donate them the babysitting service or should we just see if our cabin stewart or wait staff have little ones? CaptData Posted November 18, 2006 #2 Share Posted November 18, 2006 I would contact the Front Desk when you get there. They will say yea or nay. Fisher Price has (I think) has the rights here. As for the Cabin Steward and Waitstaff, they have no room to store things like this and very little extra money to send things They prefer tips to send money home. Just a suggestion you can still leave it behind and RCCL will donate it to local charities.

Another option for you is to give them to a crew member for their selected orphanage. Each ship "adopts" an orphanage at one of the ports they frequent, and collect items that crew members who are signing off don't want to take home with them. They donate toys and books as well as little gifts left by passengers that they are not able to keep. Check with the Pursers desk upon arrival and they can assist you. stbmom Posted November 18, 2006 Author #4 Share Posted November 18, 2006 Great ideas - I didn't realize the ship had an orphanage, that would be perfect!
FunCruiser56 Posted November 18, 2006 #5 Share Posted November 18, 2006 On our Navigator cruise my son brought a brand new pair of dress shoes, infortunatly he did not try them on when he bought them  they were too small for him. So I asked our room steward if she thought anyone could wear them- we were giving them away for free- size 14- She said that any usable items left in the cabins after check out were kept and donated to the people in Hati (Labadee) We made sure and left them on the bed in plain site. I am sure if you speak to your room steward they will know to take the toys and make sure they get to a child who would be thrilled to have them. This is a wonderful thing they do!:) It also explains what happens to all the stuff some people insist on giving to the crew members that they do not need or want in addition to or instead of cash tips as they have no room to store gifts nor do they want the expense of shipping unwanted items back to their families. The crew wants cash for tips as they want to be paid for their jobs just like we all do. I am happy to hear that they donate the unwanted gifts to orphanges where they can either keep what they need or sell things to get the things they need. I hope the gifty bag people read this thread and realize the crew is not keeping their gifts as they have no room to store any of them. I'm sure people leave items behind and it's nice they give things away to people who maybe able to use the items. :o
Nitra Posted November 19, 2006 #8 Share Posted November 19, 2006 One year I wasted the money getting one of those over the door hanger thingys for shoes etc. Well there was no way I was taking it home, didnt need it on the ship, do not need it at home, so I told my cabin steward to take it and either use it or give it to someone that could. I do this with books too and any other item I brought that I was not about to haul home again. She said since their cabins where so small it would come in handy for her and her cabin mates. At least someone got some good use from it I hope!
njoyndride Posted November 19, 2006 #9 Share Posted November 19, 2006 Very thoughtful stbmom! I didn't know about the donations and will keep this in mind. Unfortunately the only place I've ever donated is the casino  .

katiel53 Posted November 19, 2006 #11 Share Posted November 19, 2006 My husband donated to the ship---purely by accident. He left his brand new Braun electric razor on the ship. We called as soon as we got home. (We live in Fl, so it was only a 2 hour drive home) to ask if it were found. Sorry, no one found it. So, I guess the next guest had a great new razor. One other time, he left a pair of shoes under the bed, but that wasn't a big deal. We have both donated to the casino and probably will do so again next week. I don't mind the donations to the casino, but I do hope we don't lose something he/I need(s). Katie
Happy ks Posted November 19, 2006 #12 Share Posted November 19, 2006 We make a donation almost every cruise or vacation. A new top (same color as the bed sheets) a case filled with CDs, a formal night photo (must have been with the daily newsletters that we don't bring home), a pair of flip flops, a digital camera rechargeable battery. I'm sure everything got tossed, I doubt the cabin stewards have a whole lot of time to sift through what is left behind.
