Getting to Tulum and paying for it.

Yes - you should defintely convert some money to pesos for Tulum. The entrance fee is in pesos. I am not sure if they will accept U.S. $ - we always paid in pesos .

Also re:taxi - they will accept U.S. $ but you will NOT get a good exchange rate from the taxi driver - so it is better to have pesos.

I'd highly recommend using your American ATM card to get pesos as opposed to actually changing money from dollars to pesos. You'll get a better rate, no "service charge" and ATMs are open all the time - sometimes it's hard to find a bank open at the right time. I used the Scotia Bank ATM across from the bus station in Playa en route to Tulum. No problems!
