acdc Posted December 5, 2006 #1 Share Posted December 5, 2006 I've just spoken to my friends who are on the Star, berthed in Cairns today. They said that they will be bussed to Port Douglas as it's too windy to sail there...
sue2539 Posted December 5, 2006 #2 Share Posted December 5, 2006 We had the same thing last March with the cyclones, it was pretty enjoyable, the bus drivers were very informative so it was like an extra tour. An extra day in Cairns was good as well. Sue
jessica3152 Posted December 5, 2006 #3 Share Posted December 5, 2006 The main reason is that with Port Douglas only 100kms away it makes sense to avoid sailing given you have to tender from the ship at Port Douglas whereas the ship is berthed at Cairns. Anyone who has transferred from the ship to a tender in rough weather will tell you it isn't fun and there are dangers involved for both pax and crew. Skyrules Posted December 5, 2006 #4 Share Posted December 5, 2006 It's actually quite a nice drive to Port Douglas from Cairns. Makes sense to stay berthed at the wharf in Cairns than to force passengers to tender ashore in rough conditions at Port Douglas.
Kiwi Kruzer Posted December 5, 2006 #5 Share Posted December 5, 2006 I dont know why they make Port Douglas an extra call. The passengers would not be happy, if after ...(1 hours cruising?), they arrived, and were told it is too rough to launch the tenders. Makes more sense to pay the 2 days port fees and have an overnight in Cairns, then you could have a day out on the reef ,and a pleasant bus drive up to Port Douglas. acdc Posted December 5, 2006 Author #6 Share Posted December 5, 2006 On this cruise there is an overnight stay in Cairns already, so now the ship will stay 2 nights and 3 days in Cairns, with the bus trip to Port Douglas on the third day. I'm sure Star man will enjoy the excursion!

I'm sure Star man will enjoy the excursion! No, the ship will stay 2 days and 1 night in Cairns ACDC, instead of for 18 hours (9am Tues to 3am Wed) that they'd been scheduled to stay. Instead they stayed overnight and all day today in Cairns, sailing from there at 6.01pm this evening heading for Willis Island.
acdc Posted December 6, 2006 Author #8 Share Posted December 6, 2006 Yeah you're right, Skyrules. Just checked out the cruise cam, they're on their way to Willies Is.
Star-Man Posted December 9, 2006 #9 Share Posted December 9, 2006 Hey, yeah we got told by the captain on tuesday morning that because of the rough weather predicted for port douglas, we would be staying in cairns an extra day. The only downside was that we hit the rough weather just after willis island and it followed us back to brisbane.
