kgrassel Posted December 8, 2006 #1 Share Posted December 8, 2006 I know NOTHING about european river cruises, having always done the Caribbean and Mexico, so forgive my ignorance in advance! I am looking for an old castle in or near Rudesheim, Germany that centuries ago was the Renick castle, or possibly 'Reinwick' back then. I've done all the obvious google searches, etc. but can find nothing with a similar name. Supposedly it is about 5 miles outside Rudeshein and currently operates as a restaurant. I did find something called 'Lahneck' castle but after translating the history it does not match up. I want to take my 80yr old dad on a river cruise to find this castle, but not if it isn't there. Any info out there?

kgrassel Posted December 8, 2006 Author #3 Share Posted December 8, 2006 Thanks! Hopefully Steamboats will show up sometime soon. I actually have a picture of the castle if I could figure out how to post it. Maybe that will help.

I don't find the name you are looking for on the map we got in October nor on this web site but this information may be of use to you if you haven't already seen it. http://www.mediaspec.com/castles/rhein/rheinmap.html http://www.mediaspec.com/castles/rhein/index.html Here is a directory of German castles if you are looking to match up history with a castle. http:// http://www.roadstoruins.com/directory.html . Rare steamboats Posted December 9, 2006 #7 Share Posted December 9, 2006 kgrassel, There are about 40 castles along the Middle Rhine Valley :) ! I found three similar sounding names Rheinfels http://www.welterbe-mittelrheintal.de/index.php?id=300&L=3 and http://www.mediaspec.com/castles/rhein/rfels.html Rheinstein http://www.welterbe-mittelrheintal.de/index.php?id=311&L=3 and http://www.mediaspec.com/castles/rhein/rstein.html Rheineck http://www.mediaspec.com/castles/rhein/rneck.html Check the link BLS provided. Nice historic photographs. Most of the castles are ruins and partially used as hotels, restaurants... Here´s one more link http://www.welterbe-mittelrheintal.de/index.php?id=35&L=3 And another one (German only, but you can use the map and click on the names to see photos): http://www.rheintourist.de/hauptseite.php?framerechts=/sehenswertes/rheineck/rheineck.php More views of Rheineck http://www.byteburg.de/g/content/place_pictorial "Rheineck" is the closest to the name you remember. This castle is privately owned and not open for visitors. But it is located close to Bad Breisig which is between Cologne and Koblenz (far north of Ruedesheim). "Rheinstein" is the only one close to Ruedesheim. Check the websites and compare the photos there with the photo you have. If you found it let us know! steamboats
letsgo39 Posted December 9, 2006 #8 Share Posted December 9, 2006 Steamboats. Thanks for the great links. We will be cruising Budapest to Amsterdam next July and I find the links very interesting reading.I have done a short cruise of about 2 hours on the middle Rhine in 2005 and saw some of the castles but knew nothing about them. Can't wait for the Budapest to Amsterdam trip next July!
kgrassel Posted December 10, 2006 Author #9 Share Posted December 10, 2006 Thank you all so much. Great links and info! I'm thinking that just maybe the Rheineck Castle might be it! I'm seeing my dad tomorrow and I'll share all this with him. He knows the history, etc. i'll let you know! Bummer if it isn't open to the public. I had heard the one we're looking for is now a restaurant. Maybe not, though.

Rare steamboats Posted December 10, 2006 #11 Share Posted December 10, 2006 Burg Windeck close to Buehl is on the Upper Rhine River close to Strasbourg, not on the Middle Rhine River between Koblenz and Ruedesheim. steamboats
