Chair hogs on Valor, Thanksgiving week

On my Princess cruise...

I was looking and looking...finally Esther said hey come sit here...Ive been here for 2 hours and no one has claimed these seats ... they are yours.....so I did...I folded the towels put everything in order (as I would like) and then wow 2 hours later....these were our chairs...Esther "god bless her" three hours ago these were your chairs....you have not seen your chair nor missed your belongings.....your chair has been uoccupied for 3 hours and your belongings are all there......under the foot of my chair....oyyyy.....**** I forgot the little ones tshirt......I put my towel over it.....damn damn damn.......3 hours later and he wants to lay out with his kids....NOT....he left...and I was left feeling just a tad shaken...but Esther calmed me down.....those were the good ole days...shall we put timers on loungers....not....its called be considerate..if your not gonna use em...leave your bags and slippers by the pool....or hey give the bar hand 5 bux to store em for you....dont hog a lounge or a chair.....is that not common sense...or is it just me.....

So...

Are you saying people using the pool and jacuzzi shouldn't leave their personal belongings on a chair and they are considered chair hoggers? If I want to go in the pool, I have to pick up my towels, books, sunglasses and, suntan lotion and pay someone $5 to watch it? That's ridiculous. Maybe if you just want to lounge, and not use the pool, you should find a different location.

This question is to all the people who have so-called good chair etiquette.

What do I do when I have been out by the pool and decide it is time for lunch in the dining room. I plan on being gone for over an hour. Do I pack up all my stuff and lose my chair for the remainder of the day - or do I leave my towel and book and sun lotion?

In the past - I have always left my stuff - and now I'm reading this thread and everyone seems holier than thou. I know if I left my stuff on a chair and someone moved my stuff to sit down, they would hear from me - an unhappy cruiser.

I understand the chair hogging argument to a degree - but what about someone like me. I grab my chair early in the morning - sit for a while. Go to breakfast. Maybe sit a while and then go for a swim. Come back to my chair and hang for a bit and then I'm off and play a game of basketball for an hour.

Should I really be expected to be picking up my stuff and taking it with me everytime I get out of my deck chair for an hour - I sure hope not. This is another reason I much prefer a land based resort over a cruise. In my years at a similar board for land based vacations I don't think I ever heard a chair hogger discussion.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

You should not. What you do is 100% ok. These chair people are just whiners and this is one of the things they like to whine about

No sir. In my humble opinion (worth not much), the chair hogs are the ones that save multiple (more than 2 or 3) chairs that are never used. If you used a chair and have a somewhat ruffled towel and a novel on the chair while you eat lunch, your stuff should be left as is. If you save 8 chairs for your entire family at 8:00 a.m. but they do not plan to come to the pool area until 3:00 p.m., then you are a chair hog and all of your towels that are signed out on your S&S card should then be given away to other passengers as complimentary take home souvenirs.

Ha! Ha!

Thats what it seems like to me - if the "No Saving Rule" was really enforced. A parent couldnt have a chair for their kid as he ran around the ship all day and spent 10 minutes at the chair all day. I understand blatant violators - 10 chairs saved and noone at any of them for hours - that would piss me off! I guess its a fine line.

Well the rule isn't (as far as I have seen) enforced, probably because of the fine line and a variety of other reasons... but it's still a rule. Why should someone hog a chair for a whole day so a kid can stand in front of it for 10 minutes, when there are people who would like to sit in a chair for a few hours and read or whatever?

It's called having some consideration... and that is what Carnival asks its guests to do, have consideration. But some folks idea of "consideration" is totally lacking. They save a bunch of chairs, go have breakfast, go to the port talk, take a shower, have lunch, play a bit in the casino, then expect to use that chair.

And you'll find most of the people irked by the chair hogs rarely whine or complaint about anything. I'd bet the chair hogs are the whiners, since they seem to have some feeling of entitlement.

Ridiculous, the people that complain about chair hogs are the ones with the issue. The come walking down the stairs and see a crowded deck. The huff and puff in disgust and instead of looking for empty chairs (plenty are always available) they just look for the nearest one that doesn't have a body in it. Throw out the poor persons stuff (who is just going to the bathroom or getting a coke) and then claim if for themselves. The whiners are the ones with the false sense of entitlement. They are just rude people. End of story

Third, some folks who cruise have this "those rules are for the other folks" or "those are dumb rules" or "since they aren't stopping the other people from breaking the rules..." attitude.

It extends to every aspect of dealing with inconsiderate people.

If you read the entire thread you'd have read that many of these reserved chairs were empty all day. And that I was one of the early birds who was sitting among a bunch of empty chairs for several hours. Check the photos and you'll see how crowded the deck was... closest available chairs once the area was "full" (at 11am) were not in the main Lido deck area. And most of the folks, while disgusted, did not take a "reserved" chair but kept looking.

But regarding being rude, if that's how you'd characterize a person who sees an empty chair, is told the chair was unoccupied for several hours, and moves a towel off said chair, then you have a strange definition of rudeness.

This doesn't happen all the time, or on every ship, but I'm surprised anyone is defending the inconsiderate people who reserve chairs they never use. Unless, of course, they are advocating reserving chairs?

Let me guess, you feel ceated when you come on deck at 10-11am and find your towel, that you placed at 8am, has been moved and someone is sitting in your chair disrupting the group you had set aside for your family?

I don't think anyone has an issue with people who have "stuff" at A chair while they go do something for a short time. I think people have a problem with a bunch of towels getting suntans so someone can reserve a group of chairs for later use.

Personally, I would just move the obviously unused towels after asking if they belonged to anyone. But then again, I don't sit by the pool so finding a spot is normally not that hard.

I been reading this thread for a while and thought I would put my two cents in to what happen last week on the triumph with my husband and I.

We had a cabin on the panorama deck (10) and on the triumph the deck is stadium style. layered look... ok now on Sunday witch was a sea day I found a 2 chairs next to each other on the main level deck 9 lido deck sorry . but i did not save it for my hubby. He happen to come by at the same and we sat down . now there was nothing on these chairs and no one said anything to us mind you at the time. anyway Hubby has to go the bathroom and decides to go to the cabin instead of using the public since he wasnt feeling the best and did not want anyone else to get what bug he had... so he left for 5 mins and came back it is now around 130 pm still not really that crowed since the winds that day were bad .. (oh forgot to tell you main pool closed.) we there about another 45-1 hr just chillin reading and people watching. no big deal when he needs to go again. so up he goes to the room . While he is on his way back i get up to use the the public bathroom he is there at his chair I am putting on my tee shirt to run and go .. A LADY states to me YOUR NOT SAVING CHAIRS ARE YOU. I smiply reply no i have to use the bathroom.. the glare that i got when i came back after 5 min i should of walk the plank. about another 20 min I had enough sun for the day and was thinking of going back to the room .. The lady still lurking and glaring at me was hovering over my chair. i smiply sat there untill i saw a couple looking for some chairs and gave them mine and hubby ( who i had to wake up ) ... Sweet jutice for rude behaivor. We were never gone for more that 5 min. My point being is that She could of been nicer but she wanted the whole row for her family that never showed up...

oh the ever present Chair Hawk. The evil twin to the chair hog :)

this whole chair scenario is completely different on Costa based on one simple fact... EVERY chair has a towel on it because the workers put a towel rolled up on every chair at 7am for you to use freely. there are also towels stacked by the pool for when you get out:)

my story.

i was laying out watching the day go by and a nice family of 4 across from me. occasionally their 2 girls would get up and go swimming with mom or dad while the other watched all their stuff (they had a lot). The girls were tweens so they laid out too. when lunch came around they wanted to go together. wife goes 'you think our stuff will be ok?' husband goes 'ya i think so' and went to lunch. musta been a long line, (or the fact they had girls) but approx 40 min had passed (i dunno i wasnt looking at my watch) they were still gone. woman comes by and doenst even ask. she proceedes to move stuff off one chair onto the other. feeling obligated...

Me: that stuff yours?

Her: there's no chair saving...

Me: my mom told me if it isn't yours, dont touch it.

Her: (blank stare)

Me: go on, move it, that book of your's will be overboard next bathroom break.

she moved on.

5 min later they came back.

and that was me being NICE!

This may have already been mentioned ... but "chair hogging" is only an issue in places with a line-of-sight to the central pool / stage area.

This is the area where all the "fun stuff" happens, you know, hairy chest contests and the like. If you like to see lots of trashed people having a blast, this is the place.

Therefore, all the twentysomethings want to be in this vicinity. They get up early and leave a shoe or something in a chair, and then head off to breakfast or perhaps back to bed.

I really prefer not to sit in this congested area, so chair hogs are a total non-issue. But I realize some people want to sleep in, go to breakfast, go back to the cabin, head to the pool, and then find a seat in the middle of the "fun". Good luck.

The best advice I have is to find a chair with nothing on it but a hat or a shoe, tilt the chair while you move it, so the stuff falls off, drag it a foot or two, and hunker down. You'll love the atmosphere, lol.

Someone had a great idea..

It would cost the cruiseline a couple of bucks but it might be worth it.

put a timer on each chair and when you put your towels on it, you set the timer (lets say a max of 45 min). When the timer expires, the chair is considered vacant. I know some will just continure to come back just to reset the timer but some wont..

Would love to hear your thoughts.

If you are going to be gone for more than 30 minutes yes pick it all up.

That is the rule, isn't it?

And don't you think that there will be at least one chair available upon your return?

Maybe I'll hog up all the basketballs each morning to insure I have one when I want to play.

Doesn't that sound like a good idea?

Alibaster says......

Move the chair hogs chair to the F deck and move yours next to the pool in its place. This way you didn't actually take their chair. You can tell them theirs is on the F deck.

If we keep belly aching about it, the cruise lines will catch on and they will fix it but not in a good way.

Suite + poolside chair ......... $2500pp

Suite + F deck chair ............ $2000pp

Balcony + poolside chair ...... $1800pp

Balcony + F deck chair ........ $ 1400pp

and the way Alibaster travels....

Inside cabin + guarantee chair* ..... $500pp

*Guarantee chairs are subject to availability. You will get a lounge chair sometime during your cruise (probably during port days) and there is a possibility you could be upgraded to a poolside chair (definitely during port days.)

I can't believe this is such a big deal. I am just saving 10 chairs for the 6 people in my family who are either inside saving a chair at a show for me or swimming in the pool with a diaper.

Alibaster....just livin' la vida loca!

I say to ALL you chair hogs... fight as you will, reserve those few chairs right by the pool..... WE are going up to the F-deck and enjoy a better view!!!! The ocean, the peaks and the valleys!!! There is always an open chair on the F-deck and my wife LOVES it up there.

Can I get an amen from the congregation?!! :p
