Know what's most fun of all?

The whole discussion is academic. The change has happened. The OP was an announcement, not a "do you approve" survey.

And, like all of the discussions about dress code..... the stock answer is "this is the way Princess has chosen to do things, and if you don't like it you can always go cruise on (name that cruiseline) "

:) :) :)

What are really funny are your points in this debate. If you read the original post, it seems cell phone service is available in cabins and on upper decks. You keep arguing that it’s OK to use a cell phone anywhere. Apparently Princess doesn’t agree with you.

The difference between talking loudly to a hearing impaired person (which in most cases doesn’t help by the way – volume isn’t the answer) and talking loudly into a cell phone is that the latter is rude, especially when people in the area are trying to enjoy another activity. Just like wearing a cap to a meal – and not dressing appropriately.

I seriously doubt there is a great deal of crossover from NCL to Princess – I don’t think freestyle dining is that big of a selling point.

I think its fine for you to question the majority, but I also think that a cruise ship isn’t a venue for political upheaval and just because you question the majority doesn’t mean they are going to instantly acquiesce to your way of thinking. And I think the stock answer is stock because it’s a good one – you’re booked on a cruise line that has policies you don’t agree with. I don’t think it proper for me to tell people how to spend their money, but I certainly could find a better way than to buy something I don’t want.

I've never been a black kettle....and I hadn't mistaken you for a pot, but every post you have written to me has suggested that I should give up what I like about cruising, because it doesn't fit YOUR lifestyle (or of course "I can change cruiselines" because you think I'm lower class than you... btw, you're wrong). And "I was here first" would be a childish response

I would like you to point out where I said I thought you were lower class than me. How can you give up cell phone use on Princess ships when it's just been instituted? How can you be forced to give up your casual dining habits when not all nights on Princess are casual?

Ignoring the guidelines that are in place so that others can have an enjoyable cruise might be ill mannered, but manners don’t equate to class – you’re making that distinction, not I. And when it comes to my lifestyle, I’m perfectly willing to do as Spongerob suggested – meet you half way. Princess is perfectly willing to do that as well – they’ve provided you cell service in your cabin so you’ve got it on the ship and yet it’s not intrusive to others. They also provide you with venues where you can enjoy a casual dinner. I think their solutions are quite good and I have found a cruise line that I’m sticking to.

Wow. In MY school, we were taught that police officers stopped people from breaking the law, not from expressing their individuality.

I don't always agree with you, but you have been dead on here, and ***** do cops have to do with this?

BTW....That was a nasty fire.

1. As I've said...I've never used a cell phone onboard any ship, nor do I plan to.

2. I've never said that they have to (or should) expand beyond cabins / upper decks. I've only objected to those who said that even that was too much.

3. What about speaking softly into a cell phone, is that "rude" too?

4. There IS a lot of cross-over. Like it, or not. For most NCL afficionados, Princess is their fall-back. I expect it will become mine too. When NCL isn't available...I'll drop-back to Princess.

5. As I've replied to you in the past, I am buying what I want. Transportation to non-mainstream destinations...with a casino. :) I'm not "buying" dress codes & rigidity...I'm dealing with them as the unpleasant side-effects of the thing I AM buying.

6. The majority will never change its mind if an alternate viewpoint is never introduced.

7. What will you do, when Princess changes its guidelines?

What I did was ask a simple question. Why are you so desperate to get away from cellphone users? Is it that they are talking?

When I chose to cruise it was because I could really escape from telephones, newspapers etc. I handle about 80 calls per day and I don't need to be around rude jerks yelling into cell phones as most users do.

How is that different than if the person they are talking TO, is there with them?

Usually when two people are talking face to face, they are doing it quietly.

Is it that you can only hear one side of the conversation which is frustrating?

I find nothing entertaining about other's conversations.

I just don't get it. Even in a 5 star restaurant...if a travelling businessperson is eating alone, and takes a call, and quietly speaks to the other party...how is it different (to me) than if the other party were also in the room?

The operative word here is QUIETLY.

And this sort of ridiculous attitude is why we are all going down the tubes--find just one possible exception, no matter how remote a possibility, and suddenly all common sense is thrown out the window.

The only problem is that I am not qualified in, and not interested in, playing G*d and deciding who can call and who can not without annoying me.

I walked over to the fire :( Quite upsetting. It was one of my 5 favorite places to hangout & eat. (Are you a local?)

Had smoke coming in through the condo ventilation system. Smelled of pine.

For anyone who doesn't know what we're talking about, Sassafraz, a restaurant in my neighbourhood burned down yesterday (well the walls are still standing...but it's to be determined whether they're structurally sound).

There were 29 fire trucks responding. There's a YouTube video found here:

Sad. :(

That old Shack burned down..AKA the Belair Cafe et al....was quite the has been place for years!

I can and I don't have to play G*d to do it.

I'll do what we do with the loud talker in our office. When the conversation gets too loud and intrusive......we start to repeat:

Balb.....Blab.....Blab....Yak.....Yak.....Yak......Balb......Blab.....Blab....Yak....Yak......

..........and keep going until they get the point.....;)

I was hoping Princess would be the line that didn't impliment this cell service.

I loved the fact that people were not walking around gabbing all the time, like on land...I cruise to get away from that.

Hopefully the expense will prohibit a lot of it, at least for now!

I always leave loved ones the ships phone #, email address, and my personal email is Web enabled, so I have never worried that they couldn't contact me. Didn't need the cell phone, ever.

I thought most 5 star restaurants ban cell phones from the dining room, or at least ask that you don't use them there.

Another neighbour. I've been fascinated with the number of cruises you take (and as a recent newcomer to this board...I maybe don't know some publicly-available history), and was reading some of your old posts.

I see that you're 1/2 Irish & 1/2 French-Canadian.... as am I, Irish mother, FC father

You have a compelling writing style...are you a travel-writer by trade?

Unfortunately we have to stay in contact with our company while we are traveling. We have used satellite phone before.

Does anyone know if Verizon will work on the ship. Their web site say only Carnival.

We promise we will go out of our way to not disturb our fellow passengers.

Thanks

Just stepped off the Dawn on tuesday ( wish I was still there) and I just had to respond to this thread. There was some moron on his sat phone seemingly all 11 days...everytime I saw him...holding his phone near the computer to download stuff, walking around the Promanade talking...yak,yak,yak.Everywhere on the ship...constantly talking away.Obviously a very important person....

I'm sitting there thinking to myself..."how in the hell can this be an enjoyable vacation?"I'm not a bold person but I have done some pretty "ballsy" stuff in my time.I had half a notion to walk up to him and ask him why he chose crusing for his vacation...when he hadn't a clue as to what true relaxation was all about.

His actions weren't annoying...I just felt sorry for the man.

Flame away if you must but I just can't see the point of talking on the phone when you're on vacation. If you can't remove yourself from this habit even for just a little bit, you're either working too hard or you haven't learned how to relax...

Once he gets his phone bill, he'll probably never do that again!

As is your usual, you quote me out of context - if you refer to my entire statement, you'll see that I was endorsing the compromise that Princess makes in these kinds of situations. It doesn't change my opinion that the casual eating locations on board change the overall ambience of the ship, and not necessarily for the better. The positive aspect of the casual eating areas is that they do keep people who don't appreciate a dining experience out of the dining room. The only "progress" made here is in your ability to twist my statements.
3. What about speaking softly into a cell phone, is that "rude" too?
Yes.

Sorry, not convinced - metrics to prove this?
7. What will you do, when Princess changes its guidelines?
Given the way the company is run, I seriously doubt that Princess will changes its guidelines so negatively that I would be unhappy with them. I think ignorance of the guidelines by passengers is what changes the cruise experience negatively. But if Princess does become NCL or RCI, I will take my cruise dollars elsewhere - as I said, the "stock answer" is a good one.

And I'm sure I'll be accused of trying to moderate this board, but could you take your neighborhood chat to another thread?

Chances are his company is footing the bill. If he owns the company, he'll just write it off as a business expense.

I know what you mean: on our tour to Marrakesh last year, a lawyer who was apparently in the midst of a real estate deal, was on his sat phone in the bus yakking the entire 4 1/2 hours to Marrakesh and most of the way back. We were a captive audience to his wheeling and dealing.

There's no getting away from someone using a sat phone but if Princess has only a few hot spots where "regular folks" could use their cell phone, I have no problem with that as long as the hot spots aren't in public places. Whether we like it or not, cell phone usage is coming, or has come, to cruising. It's up to Princess to designate the accessibility. Vote with your comment card.
