Zeno Posted July 21, 2004 #2 Share Posted July 21, 2004 Yes I bought a hammock near Merida. Usually they are made with 3 different types of material: nylon (cheapest both in price and quality), cotton (most expensive and I think the most comfortable but not as durable as sisal), sisal/hemp (not as soft and nice as the cotton but durable and a lot cheaper, much better than the nylon). Good hammocks are hand knotted (not machine made - a lot of the nylon are machine made). Quality is largely determined by the number of knots (makes it sturdier) and size (Matrimonial (double) is a good size). I got a good, handmade, matrimonial sisal for $20 - this was a very good deal. You will not see a good quality hand knotted, cotton for less than $75. You may see machine made, cheap, poor quality nylon hammocks for as little as $10 - they are NOT worth even that. A decent quality nylon will probably be about $20. You should be able to get a good quality sisal for $40-$60 (maybe less if you are lucky).
