DevinScott Posted July 22, 2004 #1 Share Posted July 22, 2004 We have a balcony on the Spirit and want to make sure that we are watching for whales at the right times. Does anyone know a place that I can find information on where we are most likely to see whales and/or other wildlife from the ship?
cruise pup Posted July 22, 2004 #2 Share Posted July 22, 2004 Check this out for the British Columbia portion of the cruise: http://www.britishcolumbia.com/WhaleWatch/map.asp I believe that Telegraph Cove is an area where you see lots of Orca by the beach. Of course you need to be on that side of the ship, so the balcony may not provide a good viewing spot. Good luck!
10s nut Posted July 22, 2004 #3 Share Posted July 22, 2004 We saw many whales on our last day at sea. We had a suite right under the bridge so could see both sides and straight ahead. Sometimes if there is a huge whale and the captain can see it far enough in advance, he will announce it. It's truly all a matter of timing. We loved the whale watch by jet boat out of Juneau. Actually saw whales breaching. They do guarantee that you will see whales so you might want to take a whale watch.
Laura4cruise Posted July 22, 2004 #4 Share Posted July 22, 2004 We saw whales on both sea days--orcas and humpbacks. Also dolphins/porpoises, sharks, seals, puffins, loons and various other birds. All this from the ship. The water is just teeming with sea life. But a whale watching excursion is much better. You get quite a close-up view that you can't get from the ship. We brought a video camera and got some great shots that the still cameras missed, plus the sounds of the water shooting out of the blowholes. :)
