What type of clothing do they sell in the shops onboard?

After reading on some threads about how chilly it can get inside the ship, I was wondering if they sell HAL sweaters or sweatshirts in the ships shops. I figured if I can buy one onboard why take one along with me!! Plus it will give me another way of spending my shipboard credit!! Thanks,

Chef Nancy

:)

The merchandise on HAL's ships for the most part has gone downhill since HAL got a new vendor a couple of years ago. There was a thread about this a couple of months ago before the new system was installed. A lot of threads were lost. Probably that one was also lost.

They have sweaters - very few with the HAL logo. Husband and I wanted to get new fleece lined jackets while we were on the Maasdam - not pull over the head type - but with a zipper. There weren't any on the ship.

As for trying to use up your ship board credit, the automatic tipping will take of some of that. Remember that HAL will put a $10 per day per person automatic charge for tipping on your bill.

Thanks for the quick reply!! However you didn't mention sweatshirts. I was really hoping to bring one back as a souvenier to drive around in w/ the top down in my ZOOM ZOOM mobile here in Ohio in the fall!! As for the shipboard credit it was something that I didn' even plan on......just a gift ...and since this is my first cruise I have hoarded plenty of money to spend on my dream vacation!! Thanks for the reminder though....good thought!!

"What type of clothing do they sell in the shops onboard?"

My first thought was "cheap." Then I remembered how over-priced some of the stuff was, and I didn't want to be misunderstood, so I've decided to modify my answer.

They have some t-shirts, poloshirts, sweatshirts, and jackets ... some with HAL logos, ship names, etc. But they don't have much. They'll have a (small) selection of Tux shirts, bow tie/cummerbun sets, etc., for the man who has either forgotten his OR for the man who has outbuldged his. :)

That's about it. Totally disappointing. But, then, we don't go on cruises to shop ... so ... it's not a real loss (other than being a waste of space). Why doesn't HAL remove one of the useless "junk stores" and put the new Windstar Cafe there, closer to casino and everything else?

Hi, Well, I must admit that we were actually impressed with the clothing options on the Oosterdam in May for Alaska. The Sweat shirt and sweater selection was better than I had seen in a while and actully better quality than I had seen on Zuirderdam in 2003 and RCL for that matter. I don't believe in waiting for sales, first off the sales are the same junk cruise after cruise. I swear what we saw for the sale items on Monarch of the Seas in March of 2002 were still there Dec. 2003. When they come back into home port they usually restock sizes, styles and colors. Unfortuately they don't always do it every week, some times it is every other week. I have found on several occasions if I wait, it WILL Be GONE in the size I want. This goes for Swarovski items that I collect also. Our ship board account usually get charged up several hundred dollars within an hour of the ship leaving port.

We bought some really nice fleece sweatshirts, very high quality on the Oosterdam and did notice by the middle of the week they were all picked over.

Yes, I remember seeing XL, XXL. Not sure I saw any 3X but maybe. On our last cruise I remember those are usually the sizes left over in the men's wear along with small. The med. and large are usually gone by the end of the cruise week.

I bought my DH some nice polo shirts on the Amsterdam in 2002. They were size 2X & he's still wearing them. They have a nice embroidered logo on them.

I've learned to grab what I like right away as it's usually gone if I wait.

We went on a 7-day cruise....luggage didn't show up...ever.....long story....our fault......the shops were WONDERFUL in that we had NOTHING TO WEAR except the clothes on our backs and what we could buy on board.

KMart, on the first island, was also a lifesaver. I never thought a KMart was so beautiful!!!! I found a "new me" on that trip in that I am usually quite a a rule follower and pack everything you could possibly think of. We had looked forward to that cruise for a very long time, and NOTHING was going to ruin it for me including not having any clothes!

We laughed a lot (instead of crying and playing the "blame game" with each other) and had a blast. Yes, I was one of those not dressed properly for formal night. I was allowed to slip in the back door (our table was near the back door) and once I was seated, it was hard to tell I wasn't dressed. I found a t-shirt in the shop with some sparkles! The first formal night, my husband stayed in the cabin, but I convinced him to come with me (and the rest of the family) for the second formal night.

So when we criticize those who are not dressed properly, it is possible the poor souls don't even have any clothes!!!!

Life is short. Enjoy every minute!!!!

Yikes! Not receiving your luggage at all! With my luck, this would happen on a trans-atlantic and I wouldn't have a chance to shop for days! I can't begin to imagine (at six-foot-four with 37/38" sleeves) getting along with the ship's stock. I'd have to wear HAL uniforms! (What would my chances be of finding a tall Indonesian???) Then everyone would expect me to work! There goes my cruise!! :D
