Yukon Posted January 15, 2007 #2 Share Posted January 15, 2007 We are considering a Holland America cruise leaving September 19th or 22nd. Anyone know about the weather in Alaska that time of year? While the weather varies a lot and some people get lucky, the historic averages show that as the coldest, wettest, darkest period of the whole cruising season. The vast majority of the people on the last HAL ship into Skagway last year didn't even get off the ship - the weather was appallingly bad. MercedMike Posted January 15, 2007 #3 Share Posted January 15, 2007 Weather in Alaska is chancy at best. We have had gloomy cold days in July, and nice sunny ones in September. You aren't going to Alaska to lie on the deck and sunbathe, anyhow. Go prepared for cold rainy days, but dress in layers so you can leave some off if you happen on nice days. What you get is what you get. Have a GREAT cruise!
Toyz711 Posted January 15, 2007 #4 Share Posted January 15, 2007 we left sept 17th last year. only time DH could get all that time off. we had some rain in every port, sun on every sea day. glacier bay was sunny and beautiful. juneau (sept 19) was sleet/rain, skagway was heavy fog in the morning for the train ride. ketchikan was heavier rain. yukon report he had snow a few days after we left. our temps were that bad, never really cold..just wet! still had a great trip, but we had packed for it and knew that weather was possible. you can check out our pictures (link in signature) to see the rain. Budget Queen Posted January 15, 2007 #5 Share Posted January 15, 2007 I have sailed twice in this timeframe and it was always nicer on my earlier trips. I picked these up when the discounts used to be significant on these sailings as a 2nd yearly trip, the discounts are gone. :) Be prepared in your attire- you need layers, knit hat and gloves. A negative is dusk by 7pm, so plan your touring carefully. Possible northern lights.
