What is the roughest seas???????

Coming back from Cozumel to Mobile on the Holiday over this past Christmas. Have done this cruise before, but never in December and the seas were so rough the mattress felt like it was lifting off of the bed frame. We had dreary weather most of the cruise with quite a bit of rain and somewhat rough seas, but that evening was truly unforgettable. Before then, I would have said our first night on our Alaska cruise sailing south from Seward; once we hit the inside passage, the water calmed down considerably, but this last trip through the Gulf tops that.

30 ft waves off the north tip of Cuba towards Cozumel "rock and roll" for 6 hrs. side ways and up and down. (stay in room and hang on to bed)

15 ft waves in the North Seas (no power) "rock and roll" for 5 hrs.

We are thankfull that for the amount of cruises we have been on only these 2 times did we have some really bad water. The ships CX everything and very hard to walk, in the halls you bounce off the walls and alot of sick cruisers all over the ship. People sick in elevators and the smell will make you sick if you are not already. Poor crew had to clean it all up.

No pictures, only video, but it was while we were crossing the Pacific to Hawaii. Ship handled pretty well.

And then last year, we hit a storm coming to NY from Tortola. Wife got scared when she got thrown off the throne. We happened to have had an aft cabin for that one, so we were going in circles.

But roughness overall, I was quite surprised at my Mexican Riveria cruise. I thought it was named Pacific for peaceful. NOPE.

Diane............is that picture for real?????????? I would die if I had been on that ship.......holy crap!!!!!!!!

The reason I asked, is I've been on 3 cruises and am booked with my 4th in 111 days. Last cruise we were at sea for 2 days and I swore that when we hit our first port (St. Maarten) I was getting off the ship and flying home. I was sooooooo sick until one of the wonderful waiters gave me meclazine. I took one every morning and I was good to go for the rest of the day and the rest of the trip. I remember the 1st formal night going to the table for dinner and stayed about 5 minutes. Kermit and I were the same color. They said the seas were rough.

We had 14 ft waves when we were coming back from cozmel on the Sensation. It was our first cruise and there were so many sick people on the ship. I was fine my partner was as sick as a dog. So for me the ship was deserted in the public areas and the casino. We also got back to port late since the capt. had to slow down.

I never felt not safe on the cruise it was just rocking and rollin. So five cruises later we're still cruising. My partner just brings motion sickness patches.

D'oh!

Forgot to answer OP's question.

Last February we sailed Valor out of Miami. While waiting for our transfer from the hotel to the ship, a cold front came through with high winds and heavy rain. By the time we got to the ship, the rain had stopped, but it was about 20 degrees cooler, and very windy. Upon boarding we were informed that due to rough seas, we would not be going to Nassau, but going to San Juan instead. That evening, and through most of the next day we sailed through 10-15 foot seas, and experience high enough winds that the spray from the bow breaking through the waves could be felt on our Panorama (Deck 10) balcony. About 2 hours from Miami, the crew had to drain the forward Lido pool because the waves being generated within it were splashing high enough to hit the Panorama Deck above it. It was pretty fun sitting at the Lido Bar watching the "wave pool". Motion doesn't bother either C-Mom or me, so we both had a blast and slept like babies. We could tell that some of the others might not be having quite as good of a time.

Here are a couple of pics of the "Lido Wave Pool".

I have been on 16 cruises and on only two of them have I had rough sea.

The first was returning to LA from the Mexican Rivera. We had 25 foot seas as we were approaching Cabo San Lucas. Many others that I have spoken with have had the same experience. It may be because Cabo is where the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean.

The other time was sailing out of Sydney Harbor heading to Melbourne and Tasmania. We sailed into the tailend of Cyclone Zoe and experienced 30 foot seas. People were tossed out of their beds. Fortunately for me, I don't get seasick. I was on deck 5 with a porthole and I actually stayed up all night, just watching the waves crash into the porthole. You could hear strange noises and creaks from the ship.

I have only been on 1 cruise to date but on our way back from Antigua to NYC we hit the worst storm ever... the waves were about 35 to 40 feet...

We were on the Golden Princess and thats a large ship she was being tossed about like a tic tac... we were rolling from side to side and bouncing from front to back you could feel the propeller sp? hitting the water as the ship came back down I swore we would be told to get our life jackets on...... needless to say we were delayed by 24 hours cause of that storm....

We were on the Disney Magic in April 2005 out of Port Canaveral when we experienced 35 foot seas for about 18 hours. People were sick everywhere (fortunately we were not). The boy at the table next to us got sick at the table, and there was evidence of sea sickness throughout the hallways. It wasn't a lot of fun.

The next day we learned another ship north of us (can't remember which line it was) got whacked with a 65 foot wave where cabins were flooded, etc.

This was our first cruise with the kids and I made them wear those sea bands before we got on the ship. I also gave everyone Dramamine before bed - as a precaution. Maybe we just aren't proned to getting sick, but we fared okay. It was hard walking down the hallways, though. We literally bounced from wall to wall with our hands out to protect us from crashing - at the same time avoiding the occasional "accident" an earlier passenger had left behind. Didn't take any pictures of that, LOL!

I have only been on 2 short cruises and the last one was a CTN from NY. The last night the seas were very rough. I don't know how high the waves were but they closed off all the outer decks and had the vomit bags taped to the elevators. The wind was really bad and made the most horrible sound. The ship was really rocking that night. I didn't get sick but was very nervous. That night at the show I ordered a club soda with lemon and the waiter said they ran out of lemons because so many people were sick and I guess put them in their tea.

Hopefully on my cruise in June the seas will be a lot calmer.

Holy cow! BILL these pictures are crazy!! Where did you get them?

I am leaving from Galveston next sunday - West. Carrib. Think it will be like this??!?...lol.

I am worried about getting sea sick. I have a very sensitve inner ear. What kinds of things do people recommend? My insurance comapny wouldnt cover the patch. I heard about oil thta you rub behind your ears but couldnt find it at target, so I just got non drowsy dramamine. But what is meclazine, or those 'sea bands'? WHere can I get them, and how well do they work?

Thanks

We sailed out of Mobile in the summer of '05 just ahead of Dennis. At about 2 AM, 20 foot waves tossed everything to the floor including me and I was in bed.

In October of '05 Wilma interupted our trip to the Bahamas. The Captain kept the ship smooth except when turning. Then, everything not tied down slid to the low side. Photo below.

Two Carnival ships dropped off all passengers and most of the crew, then headed out to sea. The pictures were taken by one of the crew on one of the Carnival ships. There were no passengers on either ship.

We were on the fascination in 05, the night we were coming back from Nassau to Miami the ship was Rockin and Rollin. I dont know how high the waves were but when we got to Ft Lauderdale we went to the beach as we had time to kill but it was closed. The palms were sideways, the surf even at the shoreline was turbulent and the sand hurt because it was being sandblasted at your body.

None of us got sick, in fact I really liked it, thought it was fun. I dont even take med's, guess I am a weirdo!

This past week we were on the Conquest. After we left Cozumel and were heading back to Galveston, the ship was really rocking and rolling a couple of hours after we left port. First and only time I felt sick on the cruise. Stuff was falling over on the vanity table. Our cabin steward told us the next day it is always like that after they leave Cozumel. Now that I know about it, I will take some meclizine before leaving Cozumel next time! :p

'99 on the Century, we were outrunning a huricane that cancelled our stop at Grand Cayman. We had an outside on the 4th floor midship and it was just like being rocked to sleep. Pools were emptied, barf bags were down the halls and at elevators, and folks were missing at dinner. The funniest part was that we had spa appointments that day and were determined to use that "Thassolotherapy" pool. 'Course, the spa's on the top floor, so it rocked back and forth in an arc while I was on the table - it was actually very relaxing. But the T-pool - whew! That thing emptied & filled about every minute! :D After about 5 minutes, DH & I looked at each other & said, "What were we thinking?" Thank goodness we both have good sea legs.
