Hilo, Hawaii excursions

We are sailing on the Pride of Hawaii in April and would like to ask a few questions.

1. Should we rent a car or go on one of the ships excursions?

We hear it sometimes takes time to get to the airport to pickup car and will cut down our time on touring and making sure we back to the ship on time before sailing.

 

2. How strict are they about bringing beer on board?

 

3. Which night of week is usually formal night?

1. Rent a car - the time you "lose" for car pickup/return will be more than offset by the time you gain by being able to schedule your own stops.

 

2. No personal experience, but this board will generally suggest not to try it.

 

3. Tuesday, after leaving Hilo. (Same night as the Mt. Kilauea sail-by.)
