cruisenfever Posted January 16, 2007 #4 Share Posted January 16, 2007 Absolutely, positively lock your bags. We lock ours before we leave home and prior to putting them out in the hallway. If you have suitcases that have zippers, I recommend getting the TSA approved locks. If you have hard cases, then try the TSA approved straps. Either can be found on www.Magellans.com or www.travelsmith.com and are sold in pairs. You can also find them at luggage stores and I believe that someone also posted that you can find them at WalMart. Just like TSA does not trust us..........we do not trust anyone once our bags have left us.
bplazo Posted January 16, 2007 #5 Share Posted January 16, 2007 No, I never lock my checked bags. I do not have anything in them that it would not bother me to lose. I keep all my valuables with me.
willysgrandma Posted January 16, 2007 #6 Share Posted January 16, 2007 We absolutely use TSA locks. Why give anyone handling our bags the temptation to steal anything?
Rare whogo Posted January 16, 2007 #7 Share Posted January 16, 2007 I don't. It would be a nuisance to lose anything, but I feel sorry for anyone that would steal clothes and toiletries. That's all I pack.

Nancyquilts Posted January 16, 2007 #9 Share Posted January 16, 2007 We use TSA locks when we fly, and older ones when we don't. I just don't like the idea of someone getting into my suitcases, whether there is anything there that is valuable or not. Nancy
springtxbill Posted January 16, 2007 #10 Share Posted January 16, 2007 I have never locked bags on airlines or cruises. There is never any thing in them worth stealing and my thoughts are that if a person sees there is no lock on the bag, there is a good chance there is nothing worth messing with that bag inside.:)
TheWog Posted January 16, 2007 #11 Share Posted January 16, 2007 We now use TSA approved locks. Gives DW peace of mind knowing there is a lock on it. Plus they are easy to locate with a bright green lock on them. www.brookstone.com has a lime green set for $20 that comes with a guarantee that if they are broken by inspectors they will replace them for free. Lorij91 Posted January 16, 2007 #12 Share Posted January 16, 2007 It's not just what someone could take out of them, it's also what someone could put in them. Occurred to me that people could smuggle stuff that way.... If you use TSA approved locks, and your bags are inspected, they can be unlocked/relocked with no problem. If you use locks that are not approved and your bags are inspected, they will cut off the locks and not replace.
nanfromatlanta Posted January 16, 2007 #13 Share Posted January 16, 2007 Our bags are always locked with TSA approved locks. We never leave home without them.
Bargeo Posted January 16, 2007 #14 Share Posted January 16, 2007 We use plastic zip strips. I know anyone can cut them off, but I still feel safer than having nothing on the luggage, and don't want to put regular locks on every available zipper. There was another post recently that showed how these locks can get caught in the conveyer belts, doing damage to your luggage. We put a nail clipper inside an outside pocket and cut off the zip strips when we arrive at our destination. On the rare occasion the TSA has opened our bags, they left a note inside and placed zip locks back on the luggage (usually in a different color). You are asking for trouble if you pack valuables (cameras, jewelry, etc) in your luggage. We keep anything of value with us at all times. I think that is the key. robtulipe Posted January 16, 2007 #15 Share Posted January 16, 2007 We use colored plastic zip( straps ) ties also so that you can see immediately when claiming bags after your flight whether it has been removed. I have also read here that TSA will replace tie if they remove yours. We don't pack valuables in our luggage.
Host Kewlguy Posted January 16, 2007 #16 Share Posted January 16, 2007 Anytime our luggage is out of our sight it's locked. This is true at the airport also. We even lock our carryon's. Better safe than sorry.
skandls Posted January 16, 2007 #17 Share Posted January 16, 2007 Colored plastic zips on all checkins. So we can tell if anyone has messed with our luggage. With all the pockets on our roll-on plastic is easier. We carry all our valuables with us.

cactuscruiser Posted January 17, 2007 #21 Share Posted January 17, 2007 I always use TSA locks whenever I check a bag. It gives me the illusion of feeling secure. Let's face it, if somebody wants your bag badly enough, they'll just take the whole darn thing!

Happy ks Posted January 17, 2007 #24 Share Posted January 17, 2007 A thousand times yes. Although I realize locks can be cut or broken, it's a small deterrent and perhaps a thief will go to the next bag. Â I don't pack valuables like jewelry, electronics, cameras, etc... But, our clothing and shoes are not cheap and I'm not about to try to haul it all along with me. I'd hate to lose anything that could have been prevented. vmom Posted January 17, 2007 #25 Share Posted January 17, 2007 We also use those zip strips...also called cable ties. I buy the package of brightly colored ones and put 2 cable ties on each suitcase zipper. Yes they can be cut off, but I agree with the others, its more of a hassle and easier for someone who is determined to get into someone's luggage to just go into someone else's without anything on them. I can also tell if someone has opened my bag.
