MeganMamaw Posted January 17, 2007 #1 Share Posted January 17, 2007 We have booked a cruise through Princess for August 25th and will be arriving in Whittier on Sept.1st. I have been researching transportation from Whittier to Seward but there are not many options. Also we want to do the Kenai Fjords trip in Seward @ 11:30am then get on the train to Anchorage @ 6pm. Is this pushing time too closely?
Chenega Posted January 17, 2007 #2 Share Posted January 17, 2007 Whittier is simply too small to have many transportation options other than transfers to Anchorage offered by the tour companies. You might consider taking a boat trip from Whittier into Prince William Sound on the day you arrive. The focus on these trips is more on the glaciers vs. wildlife but they are excellent trips with calmer waters as well. If time allows, your best way to do the Seward trips is to stay overnight in Seward at one of the many hotels or b&b's. That increases your options since Kenai Fjords Tours usually offer early morning, mid-day, and mid-afternoon departures. That would also give you a chance to visit the Alaska Sealife Center and take a drive to the highly accessible Exit Glacier just out of Seward. Although you could take the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Seward, the best way to get there is to rent a car for two days. Stops along the way could include the Alyeska/Girdwood ski resort area, the Begich-Boggs Visitor Center in Portage Valley, and lots of scenery along Turnagain Arm and the mountain passes to Seward. Cruiser1947 Posted January 17, 2007 #3 Share Posted January 17, 2007 We have an Avis car that AAA says we can drop at the docks in Whittier.
Chenega Posted January 17, 2007 #4 Share Posted January 17, 2007 Right - not sure if there is a drop fee but Avis seems to be the only major rental company in Whittier. Could save you some time.
fti Posted January 17, 2007 #5 Share Posted January 17, 2007 We have an Avis car that AAA says we can drop at the docks in Whittier. You can rent from Avis in Whittier and return to Anchorage but there is a pretty steep drop off fee. But if there are two of you, and you really want to get to Seward then to Anchorage, it might be the best use of your time and money. Pick up the morning in Whittier, drive to Seward, take the 11.30am tour, done by 5.30pm, spend the night or drive to Anchorage. There is also a taxi service from Whittier to Seward for something like $200 for two people (called PJ's if I recall but don't hold me to that name). They can get you to Seward in time for the 11.30am day cruise, done by 5.30pm, on the train that evening. The cruise company will hold your luggage for you in their office during the cruise. Budget Queen Posted January 18, 2007 #6 Share Posted January 18, 2007 There are also a couple shuttle services from Seward that pick up Whittier. Listings http://www.sewardak.org You would need to be out the tunnel by 9am in order to make the 11:30am fjords trip. Be certain this is clear with your transport. It is far superior to overnight in Seward. Only you can decide if you want an nonstop day??
Budget Queen Posted January 18, 2007 #7 Share Posted January 18, 2007 We have an Avis car that AAA says we can drop at the docks in Whittier. Yes correct- Avis is the only operator out of Whittier, if renting one way, be prepared for at least $100 drop fee.
