4mygrls Posted January 19, 2007 #1 Share Posted January 19, 2007 What would be the minimum amount of cruise insurance one should purchase? I've been looking at some but am so confused on what we really need? Any help would be apreciated. Kathi:confused:
CaribbeanBound Posted January 20, 2007 #2 Share Posted January 20, 2007 Kathi, This is a common concern. To assist you and others, I have built a page that addresses this issue. JanineM Posted January 20, 2007 #3 Share Posted January 20, 2007 It really depends on what other coverage you have and your personal situation. Here is what I look for: - Medical: We are healthy and relatively young (40s), so need a basic amount of medical coverage. - Medical Evacuation: Our credit card automatically provides this so we don't need. - Flight insurance: We drive to the port, so don't need that. If we were flying, I would absolutely have coverage in case there was a storm and my flight was delayed. - Pre-existing medical conditions: We have none, so don't worry about that. - Pre-trip events: We live on the coast in Florida, so I do worry about a storm hitting our area before the trip, or one of us having an accident, or one of our elderly parents falling seriously ill. I always get insurance that will cover an event before the trip that will cause us to cancel. You'll have to look at your personal situation and decide what you need. I always visit insuremytrip dot com to compare coverages. Good luck, and hope you don't need the insurance!

This way, it will give you the opportunity to decide which insurance coverage best fits your needs. I do strongly suggest that you get medical evacuation included in your policy. Arwenmark Posted January 24, 2007 #5 Share Posted January 24, 2007 The most important are medical care and medical evac and expatriation of remains. Followed by trip cancellation and trip interruption. and Everyone who has family should be concerned about the pre existing condition waiver, since it covers your family members at home not just the travelers,, so if you mother with a heart condition becomes gravely ill etc. you are covered to fly back. Most healthy people figure they don't need the pre existing but they in fact do. I agree about insuremytrip.com
fastsneakers Posted January 24, 2007 #6 Share Posted January 24, 2007 I would just like to warn all new cruisers reading this to be VERY aware when buying travel insurance...you may not really know if you are completely covered. Talking with the salesperson, reading and understanding the policy is only part of the equation. Keep in mind there is someone, typically on a fat commission, that is trying to sell you the policy and someone being paid to review your claim and do their best to not give away company money. It's beginning to be as much of a gamble with insurance as it is without! My wife and I were recently denied an $8,000.00 claim by Travel Guard. We are currently employing an attorney to get our money back. He told us litigation is common with travel insurers so...buyer beware!
cherylandtk Posted January 24, 2007 #7 Share Posted January 24, 2007 Kathi, Most (many?) policies require that you purchase coverage equal to all of your non-refundable costs. Meaning that you cannot purchase coverage for anything less than what you are spending. So the minimum amount is prety easy to figure that way. As to what specific coverages you need, well that is still a big confusing area, but there are websites that will help you to sort through it. iamtrustworthy Posted January 25, 2007 #8 Share Posted January 25, 2007 What would be the minimum amount of cruise insurance one should purchase? I've been looking at some but am so confused on what we really need? Any help would be apreciated.Kathi:confused: Hi Kathi, If you want trip cancellation & trip interruption, you need to cover the prepaid, non-refundable cost of your trip with airfare, if any. If you just want the medical, evacuation & all the other coverages, then covering any trip cost still gives you those coverages. Even a $0 trip cost. If you want to cover pre-existing conditions for trip cancellation, interruption or medical treatment you'll need to cover 100% of your trip's cost. You should shop elsewhere for your trip insurance. You'll get better plans for a lot less money. Go to www.google.com and search for "trip insurance". You'll find some good sites that offer reputable companies. I hope this helps.
