Passport ?

Okay, I'm sure the easy answer is just get one. But. I'd rather spend the extra $400.00 on an excursion than getting these if I don't have to.

So, the newest rule is this:

Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

Now, my trip is this:

Fly into ANC, cruise southbound, drive over the Canadian Border and fly out of Seattle. This is June of 2007.

Do we still need a passport?

No. One of the reasons that the land/sea portion was delayed was that Alaska politicians were worried it would affect cruise ship tourism and got the deadline put off. Thanks, Uncle Ted....

Wait a minute... politicians are worried about cruise ship tourism, yet there is now a law requiring more taxes be paid by those same cruise ship passengers???

I know, I know... different tactics, different instigators... yet I find humor in the situation... it IS kinda funny, isn't it??? :) ;)

I don't know. When I went to Canada on the ferry a couple of summers ago, I gave them my passport and they gave it back to me and asked instead for my driver's license! They also wanted to know if I had a cell phone....??? Very strange.
