Burnie Tasmania Port Review

The port of Burnie is a commercial port on the north coast of Tasmania. The people of the town gave us a very friendly welcome. Everyone was given a hat pin as they left the ship. The mayor was even there to greet us. The town runs a free shuttle bus to town. There is a lot to do here, but most tours require either doing a ship’s tour or hiring a driver. We were a group of four and opted for our own driver. Our first stop was Dove Lake and Cradle Mountain National Park. Cradle Mountain National Park, a World Heritage site, is listed in the book “1000 Places to See Before You Die”. It is about a 90-minute drive from the ship, but well worth it. Many people visit Wing’s Wildlife Park, but as we visited a wildlife park outside Sydney we decided to skip it.

On the way back from Cradle Mountain we stopped in the town of Sheffield. A very quaint town much like you might find in Alaska. Many of the buildings in town have murals painted on their sides. A must to see. As we drove through the countryside we saw opium poppies that were being grown for local pharmaceutical companies. We returned to Burnie by driving through Devonport and back along the coast to Burnie. On the coastal road is the town of Penguin, so named because of the large number of penguins that live along the shore.

Our driver let us off in Burnie, where we were able to walk around town before taking the shuttle back to the ship.
