Best Cruise Ship to Alaska for Non-Smokers with Children?

I have seen a lot of pros and cons for RCI and Princess. We have cruised Disney and RCI in the past, but never to Alaska.

Keys for me would be three happy children (11, 7, 4) content with the children's program and facilities, decent food, an indoor swimming pool that can actually be used (not suffering from overcrowding), plenty of space on deck to take in all that is Alaska, and a minimum of exposure to smokers.

Is there a particular line and/or ship I should be looking at that fits the above?

I would love to hear some feedback.

Thank you!

As you might see in my sig line i am partial to RCI- but let me tell you

my DH and I are the worst- we are both former smokers who HATE HATE smoke- it makes our DS ill... but we did ROTS last spring and really- unless you plan to live in the casino- you will rarely notice the smoke... what i can say that is if i saw a group in one of the very few places you smoke outdoors, i would go by on the other side- not a big deal... doing serenade with 12DS DH and MOM 71 this june...

I think Disney (if they go to Alaska) would be about your only choice.

All of the mainstream cruiselines allow smoking.

I was thinking the same thing - wait a few more years until DCL has a 3rd ship that goes to Alaska. Even then - Disney ships allow smoking in designated areas.

why wait?? life is fragile- trips are memories that you always have with yr kids (i'm glad that my parents didnt think that way:rolleyes: )... i would not count on doing it later over a little issue like some people smoking on the top deck... go now and enjoy!!

I didn't word my response very well, but I agree with you! What I meant was if you want to experience Alaska on a Disney ship - you're looking at 2009 at the very earliest. I wouldn't wait that long, either!

Gottcha, Nancy- besides, i remember one VERY hot debate on the RCI board about non-smoking ships and non smoking itins right around the princess fire about a year ago - people were on fire:p over the issue of being forced to cruise without their drug of choice....

Us- we would lOVE to do an alcohol free trip, but don't think THAT will happen any time soon!

Disney ships don't have casinos - so I'm sure that cuts down on a lot of smoke being in one area. However, they aren't non-smoking ships.

You're right - a booze-free cruise would never happen, unless it was VERY expensive to make up for the lack of alcohol sales. In fact - a booze-free cruise is about as likely as a child-free Disney cruise!

I am in the same boat as you no pun intended:) , Kids 11,9,6 at the time of the cruise wich we are planing for Summer 08, We have it Narrowed down to Princess Sapphire or Diamond or NCL Pearl.

We have never been on either line although I will be on the Emerald Princess this December. It would seem for Alaska that Princess is the better choice with two Glaicer sailing days and what would seems as better/more time in the ports.

Any Comments would be helpful.

We will be doing cruise only with no land tours.

Well, we loved our 10-day RT from San Francisco last year on the Regal Princess. Ours kids were 12, 7, and 4 at the time, and the grandparents were there too. We noticed very little smoking onboard (and I am sensitive to it, so believe me when I say I would have noticed it). Of course, a lot depends on the individual people you end up cruising with - one person who chain-smokes something nasty-smelling all cruise long can have a big impact on your experience!

Our 2 younger kids did enjoy the kids' program (the older one wouldn't participate). The food was good. There wasn't an indoor pool, though. This year, we're doing substantially the same cruise except the Regal has been replaced with the Dawn.
