Las Vegas Non Rev Posted February 14, 2007 #1 Share Posted February 14, 2007 Yal-Ku Lagoon This looks like a good place to snorkel on your own. From the Calica pier, how far is it? Can you just take a taxi there and back to the ship? Any info would be great.
lazygal Posted July 3, 2007 #2 Share Posted July 3, 2007 This is an old question, but Yal-Ku is a hidden treasure at Akumel Beach. Very easy to do by taxi and the entrance fee is only $7. The lagoon is as beautiful as Xel-Ha, but very natural. Not crowded and not commercial. The water is crystal clear with many interesting coral caverns and trails. Taxi from Calica might be $15-$20. Arrange for a pickup time. Akumel bay has a beautiful beach and you can take a snorkle tour for $15pp. You will see giant turtles, the biggest barracuda and grouper I have ever seen, huge schools of fish and a beautiful reef. Akumel is a treasure. We did see more fish from the tour than Yal-Ku. Both are great options though.

Shellintampa Posted August 18, 2007 #4 Share Posted August 18, 2007 We loved Akumal we were there for the week in May. Don't take a snorkle tour though. The boats actually scare off the turtles and damage the reefs. Just take a taxi to Akumal and snorkel Yalku (as you enter Yalku go to the farthest water entry and enter there clearer water and more fish. When you finish Yalku go back into Akumal and eat lunch at Lucy's Taco's. Best shrimp tacos ever. @ bucks a piece mango icecream. Then if you go over to LolHA restaurant on the beach short walk signs direct you you can enter thebeach there and snorkel with the turtles on your own. The snorkel tours are really ruining Akumal Beach and honestly it is an easy snorkel out .
