Things I'll never do again on my next cruise....

I'll never again wear new shoes without first breaking them in.

I'll never again drink mass quantities of cheap rum punch on party boat excursions.

I'll never again shave my head during rough seas...ouch!

I'll never again snorkel with "community" equipment.

and most of all....I'll never again wait a whole year until my next cruise!

-god I love the "keep whistles out of kids mouth at muster" I almost threw up when I saw my kids doing that

-will never get only one massage

-never work out on ship, I'm on vaca!

-go to bed early

-put up with "chair hogs", no problems removing stuff if left unoccupied for reasonable amount of time

-shave legs in shower stall while intoxicated, ouch.

Never miss a port because it's raining.

You may never make it back to the region again. We decided to stay on ship in Guatemala due to heavy rain. Now regret not seeing country, even if wet, muddy. Who knows, could have seen a beautiful bird or meet a wonderful local person!! Take in every experience the port has to offer!

I will never let my DH have a Sail & Sign card. He would say he's "tired" and going to the cabin to lay down - half way through the cruise when we got a "preview" of our account there was $1500 charged to S&S from casino. He had a lot of explaining to do - hence the great time shopping for MY jewerly in St. Thomas!

Miss the sail-away party from Cozumel because of too much fun at Carlos & Charlies . . . .

Worry about getting back to the ship when I really want to stay and continue the fun ----- Mazatlan

Let DH run three blocks after drinking way too much beer after eating two orders of escargot -- Not pretty!!!

Why do you say that? I know they're probably a bit pricer, but they're just easy for me.

Without trying to open a can of worms by discussing what sometimes becomes a warm topic (not heated like chair hogs or nuclear like jeans in the dining room), I'll tell why I prefer to book my own excursions rather than using the ones offered by the cruiseline.

Price: But not just price, but better value, i.e. more for the money. Typically smaller groups and more flexible and personalized attention.

Better customer service: The cruiselines, as well as their contracted vendors know they have a captive audience. Some don't know better, some are just doing what's easier, and some use them for the security of being on a "ship's" excursion, but the bottom line is that since so many people will take these tours no matter what, the incentive to provide excellent service in order to propogate repeat business and/or to generate positive word of mouth referrals is unneccessary.

Are there some very good, and even great ship's excursions? Absolutely. And in some instances, circumstances dictate that they are the only viable option. There are also instances where they have a tremendous advantage over going independent - for instance on some itineraries that call on Belize the time in port is so short that some longer excursions that would require a roundtrip tender ride in addition to the tour (especially scuba and snorkeling trips that invariably take you right past the ship on the way out) can make it a close call getting back in time.

In this day and age all of the tools are there to do research ahead of time and to make the call as to which way you want to go.

Of course there are some folks that don't like to decide what they want to do until it's time to do it - it's your vacation, so whatever floats your boat...

  1. Allow so-called friends to invite themselves along on my long waited and long planned vacation!

I can completely sympathize with that!!! Add "family" to that list!!! Last year we kept it a COMPLETE secret to EVERYONE - including the kids that were going to be going!! (People that did have to know: kids' teachers and the people that were going to cat sit!! Oh and my uncle driving us to the airport!!) We called from the Port of Miami to say - We'll be back in a little over a week - don't worry about us if you can't get ahold of us - we're out of the country!!! hahaha!!

They were all mad - but they got over it!!!

Things that I will never do....

Fly in on day the ship embarks - will ALWAYS fly in a couple of days early

Fly home on the day we come back - will always have a day to "recoup" in the port city before hectic travel again!

Store anything that even slightly "looks" like it is something that needs to be thrown away any where NEAR a place that a steward COULD throw it away!

I think that I'll skip the shopping talks too....

I'll probably always overpack though - can't be helped!

well, now that my kids are gone and we are empty-nesters, I will never again cruise during Spring Break.

AMEN...any time school is out...we will be on dry land !!

(unless we just get a heck of a deal..... or we start going through withdrawals....or the sun rises......ok maybe "NEVER" is to strong a word!!! :)

* Go back to room to call kids after a booze cruise in Cozumel.

* Decide to just shut our eyes for a few moments after the phone call.

* Wake- up to the loud sound of of a ships horn around 11 at night and realize we missed 9 hours of a fun port because of too much rum punch.

I will never-

1.get a brazillian wax the day before we leave at the only place that has an appointment available

2. have such a dramatic bingo death that I hit my head while flipping over the row of chairs in front of us and people actually wondering if I am conscious

3.take off my bra to contribute to our teams dress up during Carnival survivor since I now know the next event is swimming accross the pool with balloons in my shirt( I was wearing a halter top)

4. Bring home so many carnival cups...there is no room in my cabinet for regular glasswear with the 18 (yes 18) plastic "goblets"

5. go to the casino in San Juan

6. forget to bring conditioner since the locals in San Juan thought it was funny to send us to a bar to buy it

7. fall asleep in a deck chair at 7 in the morning on my stomach...not only did I drool on myself, but I had crooked bathing suit lines because I am a fitful sleeper

8. drink 4 painkillers at Coki beach...1 is more than enough

9. go to the casino in a bikini top and sarong. Shirts are a requirement, but the pit boss knew us so he gave me a shirt rather than send me back to the room (ahh the perks of going broke)

10. Not wear underwear on windy nights.....

11. mix wine, kiss on the lips, dirty martinis, and shots of cruzan...

12. watch funvision before bed and wake up to it...

13. allow my BIL to put tanning oil on in Tortola

14. Allow DH to videotape me eating wasabi peas out of my purse while talking to a towel animal during a a drunken video commentary...

That's all I have to offer...hope someone learns something
