kevinsmom Posted June 6, 2004 #1 Share Posted June 6, 2004 does anyone know if you will not be allowed on transfer buses w/out a carseat for you child? my son will be 16 mo old and i am debating what to do. we live in ny and will be leaving out of the city. i called a company here to take us to the port and they said no way would any child that young be allowed in a limo bus/van w/out a carseat. which i figured but i was asking if they provided them. so now i am looking to have someone drive my car in and out and my family will just go in the van b/c there is a lot of us. but i am wondering if we will encounter this problem in the ports of cape canavaral, miami, and nassau, bahamas? does anyone know? i feel like i have read so many posts about no seatbelts being on the buses and such, that i am wondering what i should do. i don't want to buy the tote and go carseat and then not be able to use it. plus i have seen some neg reviews on it, such as the difficulty of installing it and chldren slipping b/c there is no bottom on it. and of course, i am nervous about not having him in one, but i am not lugging my big one either...so help!! thanks gina NCL Dawn 1st time! serene56 Posted June 6, 2004 #2 Share Posted June 6, 2004 Gina: ask your question on the cruiselines board. (each one of them) I am sure you will get a quicker response there. savdoc2 Posted June 6, 2004 #3 Share Posted June 6, 2004 It is very rare to find seatbelts on the transfer busses or shuttle busses/vans. I have found this to be the case also in the ports we have been to. I am contemplating this question too, since we will be cruising with a 15month old in Nov. I do own the sit 'n stroll, but I don't plan on taking it on the cruise - it simply won't fit on the busses/vans in the foreign ports, especially since they don't charge the excursion fees fot infants so there is no seat provided for them. Also the lack of seatbelts prohibit its use. I am contemplating the tote-n-go, for the little added protection it might add, if we are in a taxi in the US. I have also read the neg revies on it, but I have read negative reviews on EVERYTHING - including the wisdom of taking my child on a cruise. valentina1209 Posted June 6, 2004 #5 Share Posted June 6, 2004 we are cruising with a 7 month old, and are confused about the same issue, how will we get around in the ports. The sit-n-stroll car seat is very cumbersome to tote around and she's not big enough for the tote-n-go I wonder what people with infants who live in cities and rely on public tansportation do? For example, most residents of NY City don't get around by cars...how do they take their infants in cabs and busses??? I understand taxis and limos require car seats, so we'll avoid those. What if we take an excursion that transports by ferry or bus??? mommiemudd Posted June 9, 2004 #6 Share Posted June 9, 2004 In the Caribbean you will not need a car seat for the ships excursions. They were in buses where you are not required to use one. Also, the taxis in these countries do not have seat belts-at least the ones we were in. So, we tried to limit our excursions to the ones that used a bus. We also used the ships transfer from the airport to the cruise terminal so that we did not need a car seat. We are going to Alaska in August and I know we will need a car seat in Seattle so I bought a Tote n go off of e-bay. I have used it a little to try to get used to it-it is not that bad. Although it works better the older the child. I think it will be great for the ride from the airport to our hotel and then from the pier to the airport and for the excursions that we may need it for in Alaska. I have learned to have my child stand up and actually fit it around her and then install it in the car and she fits right in very quickly. I do know that it isn't approved for airplane travel. But we are not taking the full sized car seat-we will see how that goes-I think she will be in my lap most of the time anyway. kevinsmom Posted June 9, 2004 Author #7 Share Posted June 9, 2004 thanks everyone. Valentina, you are right that in the city people who use public transportation including taxis, don't use carseats. don't get me wrong, i am very convinced of their importance in keeping my child safe, but i do think it will be fruitless to bring one, if there are no seatbelts on the buses and taxis. so i will def have someone drive me to and from port w/a carseat and then on the transfer buses,i guess i will hold him. carin Posted June 11, 2004 #8 Share Posted June 11, 2004 For our cruise in Europe, I was planning to bring our sit 'n stroll for our 14-month. Now everyone's posts are making me reconsider it. We are planning to use it for a couple of long taxi rides and for a two day private car tour in Russia. For anyone that has taken a carseat, where did you store it? CabinForFour Posted June 12, 2004 #9 Share Posted June 12, 2004 We took our Sit N Stroll for the flight and excursions for our Southern Caribbean cruise, and it was truly worth its weight in gold. I highly recommend it. There's nothing like the convenience of just popping the wheels out and going. IMHO, it was no more inconvenient than just taking along a stroller since it collapses so compactly. Being able to pop out the wheels without waking a sleeping toddler was a definite bonus. Knowing that the baby was secure in both the airplane and the cars/vans was reassuring. If you have the Sit N Stroll, you definitely should take it. They're so great for long trips where you'll be traveling by plane and car.
