Tipping on Land - Italy

I have heard that in European countries cab drivers, waiters, etc do not depend as heavily on tips as American workers do. Can anyone tell me what the proper etiquette for tipping for such services while on land? Thanks, Barb

We usually round it off to the nearest Euro. As we come from a non-tipping country we are used to how it works in Europe. On most restaurant accounts in Italy and France, there is a built in service charge which means you do not need to tip. Over there, like here, they all receive good wages and therefore do not need the extra money to make up their salary.

In Continental Europe (all the bits that exclude the UK) the bills in Restaurants etc normally include a gratuity.

We normally round the bill up to the nearest 1 euro and then add a little more if there was really good service.

In the UK 10% extra is the norm.

Brian, during our month in London this November we found more and more restaurants no longer include the tip. This was our 32nd time in London and we were surprised at the sudden change.(we do not eat in tourist traps) Have you found this to be true too?

Tipping has ALWAYS been an extra in London and elsewhere in the UK.

Some West End Restaurants add 10- 15% automatically but the majority leave it to the customer.

32 times in London- WOW.........guess you must like us Brits.
