Snorkeling from shore or boat

We are going to Costa Maya in May and was wondering how the snorkeling was from the shore. We plan to go to Mahajual and find a place sit, eat, and be merry but would also like to snorkel. Do we need to find a boat tour or is the snorkeling from the shore good? If we do need to go by boat, are there tours available in Mahajual?

I can only answer the boat part. We signed up for a boat snorkel in the pier area with Tequilla beach. $15.00 each . We took the taxi bus for 3.00 each to tequilla beach and had a great 1 hour snorkel trip, at least 40 miutes in the water. We then walked for a few minutes to all the great little waters edge resturants/bars (Cats Meow being 'SAFE' food and drink) and also had fabulous beach massages. By great I mean very casual, small and laid back:rolleyes:

enjoy
