Definitely stay in Taormina. Taormina is a beautiful town perched above the Ionian sea. The views from a multitude of spots are worth the visit alone. The main corso, Corso Umberto, contains all manner of stores, restaurants and don't miss the side streets, with more shops, restaurants and Roman ruins. Visit the Greco-Roman theatre, nearer the Messina Gate, plus the churches, smaller Roman ruins behind St. Catherine's, the Naumachia, and more scattered around the whole town. The Sicilian passticeria shops with their marzipan displays are worth a picture or two. There are many cafes to stop and enjoy your favorite afternoon beverage. I could wax on about this town as we have stayed here for a week to two weeks for several years. Plus my husband is Sicilian.

hmmm...you COULD take a taxi from the port up TO Taormina IF you could find one...we took the ships excursion up to Taormina and then stayed on afterwards on our own. My husband assured me that we could take the great Funicular down get a taxi back to the ship...all was well, except that the one taxi at the bottom wanted an OUTRAGEOUS sum to take us back, all the taxis going by had people in them.....so...we had to take the funicular BACK up to the top and get a taxi up there to go back down to the ship. If you are in the town of Taormina (and you don't want to miss this lovely town) and have to get back on your own be SURE to get a taxi right at the edge of the city there!!! A walking tour there is very nice.
