Day trips to China From Hong Kong

At the end of September, our family of 4 (2 young teenagers) will have a 3 nights in Hong Kong on the way back to Australia from Europe. My husband is keen to spend some time in China whilst there. He realises that we will not see too much in a day but at least the children can say that they have been to China! The Qantas tours from Honk Kong seem to be limited in choice. We would have been travelling for 2 months by that stage so finances will probably be to the limit by then. Does anyone have any advice for us please..

Thank you.

There are ferrys that go to Shenzhen from HKG-high speed, slow speed and hydrofoils. There are also buses and a train (which is PACKED) going from HKG to Shenzhen.

I have been to Shenzhen numerous times for business trips-much cheaper hotels than HKG even adding in the ferry ride.

Two things the kids will like: Happy Valley-amusement part and Splendid China-absolutely HUGE miniature park depicting Chinese history and land marks.

Windows of the World is also in Shenzhen-kind of like a trip around the world-Eiffel Tower, Niagara Falls, Grand Canyon, etc.

You will need Chinese visas most likely. And don't miss the fireworks over the casino in Macau. The fireworks happen every night. If you want to save some money, inquire about a hotel in Shenzhen. I like the NanHai hotel, right next to the ferry terminal. The view over Hong Kong harbor is to die for. You can see the casino in Macau. And the same quality rooms are usually 1/2 price compared to Hong Kong. http://www.nanhai-hotel.com/

There are also full day tours from HKG to Shenzhen which are pretty reasonable (about $85.00US).

Here is a link to a company I used for a Macau tour. I know they do Shenzhen.

Thank you Greatam. I have just been researching the tours available on this website. They look very interesting. Do you have a preference as to which one would best give our family a feel for China? (As an early childhood teacher, I do like the ones that visit a Kindergarten.)

You have a ton of options ( I spend lots of time in that part of the world )

1. Take a Day Trip to Macau - No need to buy a tour. Just go down to the Ferry Terminal ( Canton Road Kowloon ) and jump the next Jetcat or Jetfoil heading to Macau. ( As much as a pain it is be sure you have a multi entry Chinese Visa in your passport - It costs a few dollar more but its worth it for the convenience. ) Macau is on the grow constantly as Yes whilst it is a Casino mecca, there it lots ( Non gambling activities ) to

enjoy and places to visit. You can spend a day looking around and be back in Kowloon by evening.

2. Shenzhen is worth the trip, You would be best to speak to your Hotel about an organized tour out of Hong Kong. Shenzhen is an amazing place as much Hong Kong as mainland China or vice versa. Its a short train trip

Check out City Hall ( Look Awesome ) Windows on the World, Happyland is not worth the effort ( its lame ive been there with kids )

3. Other day tours, A few day tours upto Guangzhou are offered normally in via Shekou. Interesting for a day trip but very limited in what you see to the point they offer very little real value.

4. If you want to experience China, I would suggest take a overnight tour to Guangzhou and really see something for your efforts.

If youve never done Hong Kong allow at least 1 days for sightseeing as well.

Enjoy its worth the effort.

Thank you for this great advice. I have been to Hong Kong a couple of times although not since 1999! We have three nights in Hong Kong (arriving in just after 4:00pm) but really only 2 full days and then a 4:00pm flight out on the next day. We have already booked a "complimentary" half day tour of Hong Kong. We would also like to take the children on a "junk ride" of the Harbour. Of course we need to do some shopping. LOL! We would like to spend another day seeing something of China. What would be your preference for us out of all of your wonderful suggestions?
