Anybody use walkie talkies on the ship?

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the advice! I'll start looking for either the cobra or the motorola. I'm still a bit confused about the licensing issue. With whom do they have to be licensed?

We'll keep them off most of the time but I would like to be able to find my husband in the afternoons. I like to take a nap...he likes to walk around and talk to his new buddies. We set times to meet but my husband has what appears to be the adult version of ADD. He starts talking to people...or sees something shiny on the ground...whatever...and he loses track of the time. He does the same thing on shore. You turn around and *poof* he's gone. He's walking along, heading somewhere but then, "oh look, a chicken" and off he goes.

I have been chukkling about this since I read it! So funny....especially the chicken bit. Thanks for the laugh:D :D

Thanks for the great info! :)

I will be cruising with my kids in August and we are seriously thinking of buying a pair. My youngest will hopefully enjoy AO, but I got two teenagers that are planning to give us a run for our money.

My husband and I always take walkie talkies on vacation with us. We took them on the last cruise (we were on Carnival Celebration, a rather small ship). This time we are going on Splendour which is also a smaller ship. We had NO problems AT ALL with our walkie talkies. We don't have expensive ones. We don't use them constantly...we just use them for when he wants to go to the casino, and I want to go to the pool. He calls me when he's done at the casino and wants to find me. We don't have conversations on them, we just locate each other. He would get too frustrated trying to find me. I think it's nice to just be able to find each other. We've never ever had a problem. Ignore the negative comments about people using Walkie Talkies....to each their own, and if you like to be able to go about on your own, but still find each other, walkie talkies are very helpful! My husband and I don't have to be tied at the hip on vacation....we like together time and apart time.

OMG  "Oh look, a chicken" Several of us use that phrase at work all the time! I've tried to explain it to others, but they just don't get it. :D

geniseg2000- talk about teenagers giving you a run for your money.... that's why I don't use the walkie talkies any more,I just rent the DECT phones. When they had the walkietalkies they could ALWAYS find me,but for some reason when I tried to locate THEM late at night, they said they "weren't working right"- "couldn't hear me"- "couldn't find the right channel" - - substitute any old excuse you want. Now with DECT phones, no excuses.

My husband and I are thinking about purchasing walkie talkies for our next cruise. We figured that it would be a good way to keep track of each other on those days when we do our own thing. Does anybody know if they work on the ships?

HELLO, MY HUSBAND AND I USE THEM ALL THE TIME, THEY WORK GREAT.

We just returned from the Freedom on Sunday. We had 3 families with 5 kids (3 14 yo's, 1 12 yo, & 1 11 yo). We had 2 sets of Motorola Walkie Talkies and they worked great. We kept them on Channel 13, subchannel 31 and had no problems and no interference. There was no one else using that particular channel so no confusion with other families. They were great at keeping track of where everyone was. This is our 3rd cruise and we have used them everytime.

Just be sure to bring extra batteries.

Glad to hear that walkie talkies are a great idea. We will have a pair with us for our skiing trip (after the cruise) and was also wondering.... Thanks for all the advice.

We just returned from the Navigator last week and we saw so many people using all sorts of communication devices. One word...annoying!

We traveled with 6 people, 2 adults and 4 teens and never had a problem meeting up. The walkie talkies were very annoying, people using them in the elevator and at meals. I can see using them in ports but on the ship just set up meeting times to check in. How far can people in the group go? Like someone said previously at least you know you will meet up for dinner.

Just my opinion!
