7 hours in Messina - suggestions ?

Hi all

 

We shall be in Messina as part of our Carnival Freedom cruise in August. The ship docks between 7am and 5pm, but after allowing for breakfast and having to be back at ship by approx 4pm, this leaves us with about 7 hours spare time (including travel time).

 

Please offer any suggestions as to how best we should spend this time - we have seen Taormina, but feel that this may be a bit too far and rushed - is this true or should we try to visit there ? If so, we would like a private transfer there and back and would appreciate any recommendations.

 

If not, is there anywhere closer to Messina we could go instead ?

 

What about Messina itself ?
