Sourismom Posted April 13, 2007 #1 Share Posted April 13, 2007 I was under the impression that I could just secure our onboard account/S&S card with a credit card and pay for anything I buy on the ship that way. So no need to carry as much as cash to the cruise. But I keep seeing people talking about putting money on their card. Do you have to set an amount or pay for it with cash? bubbles1209 Posted April 13, 2007 #2 Share Posted April 13, 2007 Not everyone uses a credit card to secure the account, that could be why you hear them say they need to add money. Go to the Carnival website click on FAQ, then click on Access to money on board, then click on what is sail & sign. It will tell you everything you need to know. Hope this helps:)
kitty9 Posted April 14, 2007 #3 Share Posted April 14, 2007 A vast majority of passengers back their sign and sail card with a credit card, but some, who either don't have a credit card or prefer not to use them, use either cash or traveler's checks to back their SS card. Don't worry, the cruise line prefers you use your credit card.
Sourismom Posted April 14, 2007 Author #4 Share Posted April 14, 2007 Great, thanks! I just wanted to make sure I wasn't operating under a misassumption.
Sourismom Posted April 14, 2007 Author #5 Share Posted April 14, 2007 OK, now I realized I don't know how big the S&S cards are. Are they the size of a credit card, or bigger?
tnsail Posted April 14, 2007 #6 Share Posted April 14, 2007 They look just like a credit card. Have the magnetic strip on the back and they will even embed your photo in it when you embark the ship..... No worries........
daveco58 Posted April 15, 2007 #7 Share Posted April 15, 2007 And they make a dandy souvenir.
Sourismom Posted April 15, 2007 Author #8 Share Posted April 15, 2007 Oh, good. I bought a small waterproof wallet thingy today, and anything bigger than a credit card wouldn't have fit!
gizmo Posted April 18, 2007 #9 Share Posted April 18, 2007 Sourismom, Be aware that cruise lines put a "hold" for x amount per day, per person, on your credit card. Be careful of your credit card limits. Sometimes people get caught short on shore ,because the hold eats up your available credit and the purchase you are trying to make would exceed it. ;)

terinzak Posted April 18, 2007 #12 Share Posted April 18, 2007 during our cruise--I know because I called my cc company during the cruise. In fact, RCi didn't bill the cc company till 3 days after the cruise ended.
98Charlie Posted April 18, 2007 #13 Share Posted April 18, 2007 Is that card also the key to the cabin??? Many times it is. Some of the older ships in lines we have sailed have separate cards, one for identification and charges and a separate one for cabin door. Be careful to keep you cards away from any type of magnet as it will demagnetize the magnetic strip. Has happened to us more than I like to admit. My glasses have magnets in the frames to hold my sunglasses, and you can guess what happens when the glasses and card meet up in my purse or pocket.:( Dianne
TRIBE1959 Posted April 19, 2007 #14 Share Posted April 19, 2007 Carnival billed CC daily. We used debit and it showed every charge the day we used it onboard.
blindrid Posted May 10, 2007 #15 Share Posted May 10, 2007 Debit card usage is a totally different critter since there daily limits in place.
