ruecatt Posted April 17, 2007 #1 Share Posted April 17, 2007 We will be sailing on the Amsterdam June 1 to Alaska. We have a 10 year old son and was wondering if anyone has used HAL kids programs on this ship and what they thought of it.
Old As Dirt Mom Posted April 17, 2007 #2 Share Posted April 17, 2007 Ruecatt: We were on the Amsterdam during the holiday season in late December/early January. The Youth Program Director at the time was Sarah Truax, who is really excellent, and has a natural knack for keeping kids/teens busy and happy. She had three other staff to help her, who all did a great job with the 80 children/teens on our cruise. I don't know if Sarah will be onboard when you cruise in June, as the cruise staff does get time off between contracts, and they also rotate among the ships. Our daughter was in the 3-7 year-old program, and your son will be in the 8-12 year-old group. Prior to boarding the ship, there should be a staff member from Club HAL to welcome you and distribute information. There will be an orientation meeting the first evening of your cruise, when you will have the opportunity to meet all the staff, ask questions, and learn about the program. The 8-12 year olds will participate in both indoor and outdoor activities, including various games, arts and crafts, pizza parties, movies, opportunities to visit the video arcade, and sports activities. Outdoor game activities take place on the Sports Deck, or in the teen "Oasis", located on the top deck, when the older teen group isn't utilizing that space. In Alaska, if you're visiting Glacier Bay National Park, park rangers board the ship and give a presentation to the kids about Glacier Bay, its natural history and environment, as well as the various wildlife to be found there. There will also be a Hoonah native interpreter who will teach the kids about Alaskan native cultures. If you have anything more specific to ask, I'll try to help you if I know the answer.:) Here's a link to info regarding Club HAL on HAL's website.
