Whats the general line of thought here? Do most people go barefoot, wear water shoes or wear something else?

We've been twice, were barefoot both times.

When we went we were told no water shoes. This way if you should step on them you feel it faster with your bear feet and pull away. With the shoes on you might not feel them and could hurt them and they might at that point hurt you. I have been 3 times it is so much fun.

It has been a long-standing practice that all persons go barefoot at the Stingray Sandbar. This custom is being incorporated in new regulations governing tour operators taking passengers there. That means it is no longer merely a suggestion, tour operators must insist you go barefoot.

I'm gathering you wear your shoes on the boat and take them off before you get in the water???

Stingray city is on a sandbar so you should have no problems walking. Sandels are fine for the boat as well as flip flops.
