I know about Friends of Bill, but what are Friends of Dorothy?

Apparently gay people like me are expected to be fans of The Wizard of Oz

I don't like the movie and I don't like the FOD gatherings either :D

The term 'Friends of Dorothy' actually started back in the 20's when NY socialite Dorothy Parker would welcome gays within her elite circle. Since gays had few social outlets at that time, 'friends of Dorothy' was sort of code language within these circles. Only later did the phrase change to identify with Dorothy (Judy Garland) of Wizard of Oz fame.

My favorite quote of Dorothy Parker:

I like to have a martini,

two at the very most.

after three I'm under the table,

after four I'm under my host!

Thank you for sharing both the background on the code term "Friends of Dorothy" and also the verse! Prior to this post, I was familiar with only one poem attributed to Dorothy Parker.

Resume

By Dorothy Parker

Razors pain you,

Rivers are damp,

Acids stain you,

And drugs cause cramp.

Guns aren't lawful.

Nooses give.

Gases smell awful.

You might as well live.

Norm.

Folks ~ this thread veered seriously off topic into a marriage discussion. I believe the OPs question has been sufficiently answered therefore the thread is closed.
