Any freebies for New York?

Sony Museum 56th & Madison. Interactive museum about television, lots of hands on exhibits. You could spend a couple of hours there. FREE! http://wondertechlab.sony.com

Depending on when you go, you may be able to catch a free concert in the Park: http://www.centralparknyc.org/activities/music

You can get $5 tickets to see baseball games on some nights, usually mid week games against the less popular teams. $5 Tickets to the NY Yankees at: http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/nyy/ticketing/fujifilmpack.jsp.

$5 Tickets to the NY Mets at http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/nym/ticketing/specials.jsp

Subway fare anywhere in the 5 boroughs $2 each way.

Metropolitan Museum of Art & Museum of Natural History both have "Suggested admission prices" of $14/adult, but I've seen people give them a buck. Not my personal style, but you asked.

You can get discount tickets to Broadway shows at The Ticket Booth at The Marriott Marquis: http://gonyc.about.com/cs/discountbroadway/a/tktsbooth.htm. Half price for a Broadway show can still be over $50 a seat, depending on how popular it is.

Great People Watching locations:

Central Park

Grenwich Village

Brooklyn Battery Park

Cheap food tip: Check out the street vendors who sell gyros, hotdogs, ice cream, shish kabobs, sausage sandwiches, pretzels, and nuts. Lots of street corner shopping stands. If they have tables, they're probably legal. A cardboard box across the top of a trash can is not a table.

If it's a guy with a brief case or a blanket on the sidewalk, they don't have a permit. If you buy from them, don't fall for the "sales tax" add-on. And don't expect a liberal return policy from any of these folks, legal or not.

Check out the many flea markets they have around town: http://www.ny.com/shopping/flea/. also http://www.nycstreetfairs.com/sched.html

The Staten Island Ferry!!

Please don't go during the evening rush (4:30-8:00), and remember that its purpose is as a COMMUTER ferry, yield to the commuters. If tourists would do this it would probably stop the talks about charging tourists to take it!

You will be rewarded with views you may not even get to see from your ship!

Go to the restaurant and lounge in the lobby of the Marriott and sit and people watch. Walk around Central Park or Times Square. Most museums have suggested prices and you can give whatever you feel comfortable giving.

While it's not free, the Circle Line is a fun trip.

If you want to see some absolutely fantastic basketball NY style, there is a court on 6th Ave (Ave of the Americas) and Bleecker in Greenwich Village. Some of the best of the NBA gained streetball skills in this little basketball court.

The other freebie basketball court (and very famous) is Rucker Park on 155 St and 8th Ave. During the summer, you will often find current NBA players hanging out, playing ball with the locals. Allen Iverson (former Philadelphia 76er's standout) is FREQUENTLY at Rucker Park.
