You're very welcome. It gave me a good excuse to go for a drive! Most of the mileage figures are confirmed now, but there may be some small changes to it yet. Once I started looking really closely, I was amazed at how far out both Bell's and The Milepost are - even their miles-to-kilometers conversions are often wrong! Yukon,

Can you also recommend a good map to use along with your narrative guide? Myself, I'm a visual type person and a map helps me see the big picture perspective of the entire route.

But if there is no detailed, reliable map, I'm sure I'll be just fine with your guide.

Thanks,
Dave

I've got a couple of maps linked from the top of my guide, and/or you can pick up a color version of the lower map in the free Skagway Guide available at the NPS Center and other places in Skagway. It's a 6x8-inch glossy color booklet. The top one is a section of a gov't highway map that I added some stuff to.

What a geat thread!! Yukon or others. Could you please give me some suggestions on where the best areas to picnic are. We are renting a van from Sourdough and are looking forward to our drive to Emerald Lake. Thanx in advance

kden - the two best picnic spots are the beach at Mile 40.1 and the 2-mile-long sandy beach right in downtown Carcross (which my cabin looks out onto - http://www.yukonalaska.com/webcam/webcam/ ). At both spots you can get far away from anyone else who may be there.

I called Avis in Skagway this afternoon (907/983-2247) to check on the reservation I made at Avis central reservations. The Skagway Avis has our reservation so we're good to go... not until August. We're really looking forward to the drive after seeing all Yukon's photos under another thread. Those of us doing the drive are going to be ultra-prepared... thanks to Yukon!

Thanks for all the information on "can't miss" things to do!

OK, what do you think? Just checked on Avis and they came back for the day I'm in Skagway as not available, BUT I know that people here have said they arent connected to the main Avis site and I had planned to call them directly anyway since someone posted the number here (I was just trying to verify a rate). Well, I got the office and they said they had cars that day and that one was reserved for me. Nothing other than a name taken, no cc info, nothing. Just ok, what kind of car do you want and we have one for you. I plan to be there when they open just in case, but dont know how they handle the cars there. Kind of makes me nervous. The same thing with me. I called to rent a car in Skagway, called the office direct. They did not take a credit card or anything except my name. No confirmation number was given even though I asked. They said to just mention the name of the person holding the reservation. I have always dealt with Hertz in the past and find this procedure very unusual. I always like confirmation numbers for everything.

I hope we have cars waiting for us. Maybe someone else will come along and tell us what they have done in the past with Avis here.

I just plan on being at the office when they open at 8 (and finding DXXXXX who I spoke to ). The only thing I was worried about was the Avis site showing none available and them saying they had cars. Maybe they dont let the main Avis site book all the cars they actually have on lot for walk ups? Lets hope. If not, we'll find something to do.

Also who said they booked thru Avis and the reservation came thru to the office in Skagway? I was under the impression that they werent connected or else I would have booked via the Avis site a while ago. Maybe that would be the smart thing to do for anyone else who is wondering about it. Book on the Avis site and then just call the Skagway office to be sure it came thru. Will let everyone know if we had to walk to the pass....

Hi kden;

Some of my friends went to the Emerald Lake Ranch for horseback riding and brought their lunch out on the Yukon horseback for a picnic on the trail! They sat on top of a mountains behind Emerald Lake for lunch...It can't get much better than that! You would have to notify in advance so they make time for the picnic. My friends booked through Southeast tours. But if you are driving into the Yukon I am sure you could make the same reservations.

Good Luck...

tadjr... it was me who posted toward the end of the 1st page of this thread, that I booked with Avis central reservations, before Avis in Skagway was open for the season. The reason I checked the beginning of May, when I knew they were open, is because I had read that sometimes central res's don't reach the Skagway office. Seems our's did, res #, right car, etc. I also heard that the Skagway Avis doesn't ask for a credit card but the cars are there waiting under your name. I do plan to have us there a few minutes before 8 am, which is the time our rental is scheduled for.

I called the Skagway Avis office today just to confirm and make sure they had our reservation AND to reiterate that we have and early helicopter ride and won't be picking up the car until about 11am - please don't give it away!!! They had the reservation, no problem! YEAH - can't wait until the drive and visiting Carcross and Emerald Lake!!

Thanks again Murry for all of your help!

I actually booked a car on the Avis site for July 9th but thanks to the posts on this forum, I knew to call the Skagway Avis. Sure enough, they did not have a central reservation I made but just took my name and a type of car and said they would have it for me. It made me kind of nervous as well but I guess this is how they do things. The lady was very nice though. She said "don't worry about a thing, I have you right here on a piece of paper and we will have a car for you"
