Just curious if CCL or other lines will ever ban smoking inside of cruise ships (or at least certain areas.) With lots of open deck space there appears to be ample space for smokers to endulge. Do you think cruise ship companies will ever restrict where folks can smoke inside? Just curious...

The first time we cruised we sailed Paradise. It was the first and only non-smoking ship. I don't know how long it was before it became smoking. We were told many people didn't like that it was non-smoking. But I couldn't tell because the cruise was full. at this point, I don't think CCL will have a non-smoking ship unless another cruiseline has a non-smoking ship and keeps it non-smoking regardless if a lot of people don't like it.

Hopefully not, we travel a lot with a couple who does, and I would hate to lose them to the darkside of land resorts and they would definitely stop cruising. Tried unsuccessfully to get them to quit, but no luck yet. I have never smoked, I am also never bothered by others who smoke.

On my last sailing I could have come back with black lung for all I know - there was an incredible amount of smokers in confined areas. Due to chronic sinusitus it is very difficult to be exposed to constant smoke. It is a shame that the staff working on these ships are exposed week after week to tons of smoke - wonder if you can get lung cancer from second hand smoke...

Smoking is banned in certain areas and has been for many years. Only half of the "open deck" areas are available for smokers now. For whatever reason ($?) the Paradise did not work as a completely non-smoking ship.

FYI..."Black-lung" is from coal-dust.

Most smokers are considerate of others, IMO. Open decks are divided into smoking and non. No smoking in any food venues or in the main showlounge. Until just a few years ago, smoking was allowed in the promenade areas, no longer so. Non-smokers have more options now, and less for smokers. Doubtful there will ever be another non-smoking ship.

As I read the question you are asking if CCL will ever restrict smoking, not ban smoking. They already do restrict smoking. You can not smoke in the dining room, the auditorium, the shops and generally one side of the ship. There are many other locations were smoking is not permitted.

I am a smoker and since smoking is not allowed in most public businesses on land I actually feel uncomfortable smoking inside the ship. Even though it is permitted in the cabins I keep it to the bare minimum.

When on deck I do not light up near someone that is not smoking. I respect their space as I would expect a non-smoker to respect mine. There is about as much chance currently of having a non-smoking ship with Carnival as there is having a non-drinking ship.

I don't expect a non-smoking ship. As stated Carnival tried it already with the Paradise. However, I'd love for them to block out cabins as non-smoking, so I wouldn't get one right after a chain smoker was in one. Hotels already do this.

Newbie here - is smoking allowed in non-balcony rooms? I know you can't be the smoking police and check every room, but I really hope that rooms that can't really be aired out that well are not smoked in.

Pax are allowed to smoke in ALL cabins.

and I don't. That's why we pay extra for a balcony cabin. Since smoking is limited in public areas we find that she can sit on one side of the ship that permits smoking. I have never found it overpowering when we go to smoking bars. I really detest the non smokers who have to walk only on the smoking side and complain. There is excellent ventilation and no one should be troubled unless they are looking for it. We don't cruise Oceania as they are too restrictive. I see no harm with smoking out of doors whether it be a balcony or deck.

Great.

If the stench of smoke is really bad would they move you if you asked, and put smokers in the room instead?

They don't switch your room with smokers. How would they even know who smoked? Beside just because you might be a smoker you might not smoke in your cabin.

I do not object to smoking in well ventilated areas such as outside on decks. Where I had a problem was in the casino (trying to enjoy myself) and at the piano bar on Valor. Unfortunately this was an enclosed bar and once the door opened it was full of smoke. Friends told me how much fun it was but after 2-3 minutes I was having a hard time with my sinuses and had to leave. I was sorry to miss all the fun but the heavy cloud of smoke prohibited me from participating.

Hoping no flames but here goes:

Hotel chains are completely banning smoking. Disneyworld just banned it in ALL hotel rooms. My guess is that sooner or later, the cruise lines will follow suit on this. It will probably be later than sooner, but I think it will be an eventuality. It might be gradual, maybe banning it in all the cabins and only allowing it on decks/balconies at first....heck, we never thought that restaurants and bars in many states would ban it, I think it's just logical that cruises will do it too.

Don't know if it's true, but a TA told me the reason Carnival ditched the non-smoking ship was because they weren't making enough money in the bars. I guess smokers drink more

I don't know if we'll ever see smoking banned on ships, but I do think the restrictions will increase. As a non-smoker, I really like the increased restrictions, but I do feel sympathetic for the polite smokers (yes, I believe there are a few ;) ) who are being shoved to the back of the bus. Maybe the only solution is segregation: completely smoking ships and completely non-smoking ships :p

I would book on a smoke free cruise in a quick minute. How wonderful it would be, for a non-smoker like myself, to go to the casino and night (and be able to breath) and not have to worry about your neighbors smoke invading your balcony.... :)

I never understood how smoke invades the balcony...the ship is moving at what...20 knots?

You would think that would be the case.. but no.. Smoke from your neighbors balcony most certainly creeps through the partition or is blown back in your direction, especially if they are a chain smoker or there are a few of them out there puffing away.

It's the same as someone smoking in a car in front of you as you are driving. The smoke can be pushed by the wind into your window... it's physics...

How come everyone who smokes is classified as a "chain smoker"...never understood that...anyway...

...Sorry but I've never been driving behind someone who was smoking and had the smoke make a beeline for my open window. I'm thinking that even at slower speed the smoke would dissipate quickly.
