June 10th Southampton

Was hoping the article itself was going to be on the Daily Echo website & I could just post a link, but its not there yet, so I will have to type in the basic info :)

Its 25 years since the Falklands war, and apparently there will be a commemoration on June the 10th, involving QE2

As a former troop carrier for the conflict, she will host a reunion and lunch on Sunday. About 100 veterans will attend the special lunch hosted by Carol Marlowe (Cunards president & MD) and Captain Ian McNaught in the "liners prestigious Queen's Grill Restaurant". There will also be a plaque unveiling on board.

There will also be 2 royal Navy ships in port - HMS York (a type 42 destroyer) and RFA Largs Bay (Royal fleet auxiliary vessel). Both ships - also berthed in Eastern Docks will be open to the public over the weekend at berths 46 and 47 from 10am to 5pm (Largs Bay is open saturday only) Access to the docks will be by foot only via dock gate 10 & access to the ships will be controlled by Royal Navy Security in conjunction with port staff.

At 2pm on Sunday a Harrier attack fighter from HMS Illustrious will make a flypast over the QE2 & veterans in a "salute recalling the many sorties this type of aircraft flew during the war. HMS Illustrious was at the heart of the taskforce in the South Atlantic"

At 3pm there an open air service at Holyrood church followed by a march of veterans to the Civic Centre with military musicians.

Sounds interesting:

2 (tongue in cheek) comments

1) are they expecting me to lug my luggage from the dock gate to the ship

2) The flypast is scheduled for when we (the passengers) are locked up inside the terminal building waiting to board! :(

Hope it doesn't stress the on board staff too much - they've got to get my luggage to my cabin before dinner - I an (almost certainly) boarding in jeans:eek:

Karen (sailing tomorrow......)

While was looking for the article about June 10th, found this readers letter about preserving QE2 after her retirement

The southern daily echo for Southampton - Friday 8ths edition.

http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/index.php

I was a bit surprised the article wasn't available online - perhaps it will turn up later in the archives. Its part of a regular column - Hampshire Heritage & I notice they only go up to june 4th so far - so perhaps it will turn up later on http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/heritage/hampshireheritage/ though although the column is in the paper most days, it looks like not all are archived.

Much of the basic info is on http://www.southampton.gov.uk/news/NewsItem.asp?ID=3366&M=0

and its also on the Cunard site http://www.cunard.co.uk/news/default.asp?Cat=, & http://www.cunard.co.uk/news/default.asp?Cat=,&View=ViewArticle&Mode=News&ContentID=6671&Cat=,

Karen,

Why not catch a ride on one of those Harriers and after they've flown by, have them drop you onboard on their return?

LOL

Actually its not such a strange idea - I work next door to the airport and live under the flight path - I have often mused, particularly when the train is late/ cancelled, about hitching a lift and parachuting down into the park about 5 minutes walk from home :D -

Cunard news from the web site:

http://www.cunard.com/AboutCunard/NewsReleases.asp?Cat=&View=ViewArticle&Mode=News&ContentID=6601&Active=News

Karen,

Make sure you bring those noise canceling headsets! I got to witness a harrier hover overhead at the Oshkosh Wisconsin Airshow, some 25 years ago (I think- about that) WOW! That is loud!

There is a radio ad on here these days about commuting and alternatives to the daily grind (Selling on commuter vans) some of the suggested scenarios ar, Being shot out of a cannon, ultralight. Parachuting in.

Now i can say as I know anyone who has parachuted in ti work (though I know a few who have parachuted AS work- Demo jumps and such) but I have known a few who have flown to work regularly by their own private plane. In fact I work with someone who does it occasionally now. (club plane) It helps to work near an airport. Our old telephone company garage backed up on an airport.

Have a great trip!

Karie,

going to pay some money towards my trips today
