Port Canaveral as a port of call

Just something I've been wondering... I'm used to using Port Canaveral as our departure port and am curious what it's like as an actual port-of-call during a cruise, such as with the Norwegian Spirit that was in port today. Do the passengers use the terminal at all or exit directly onto the pier? Is there really anything to do? I know it's not the kind of port where you can just get out and walk around exploring... And very few shore excursions are offered to us as post-cruise, pre-flight trips; is there a more extensive list when ships call on Port Canaveral? Does anybody actually head into Orlando, and for those that do, is there anything to do?

Sorry for all the questions, especially considering this is just pure curiousity and not trip planning or anything! Thanks in advance to anyone who answers!

hi, sailed out of here twice on the glory. we go in a day early to hang on the beach and eat seafod. both times, we went into a terminal, the onto the ship. thee r a few restaurants at the pier, several hotels have park/ride too. all the people at the pier is a pain so we take a cab. everything is close, cabs, hotels and port are within a few miles of each other. not the best beach scene, but it is fine for a day pre and post. we have flown into mco and stayed there a few days then took a shuttle to the port on sat am..then got a car after and stayed on the beach a few days. comfort inn/suites has park/ride, nice big pool area and karaoke in the bar at night. cindy
