How often do you change clothes?

Recommended Posts

We always over pack. What do you think that room under the bed is for if not for empty suitcases? lol.

I pack shorts and t-shirts for day wear, and swim wear and coverups. Evenings I wear dresses, he wears slacks and shirts, formal night requires a suit for him and a formal for me. Then there's jammies, snorkle gear, bottles of wine, wine glasses, board games, more wine, binoculars and cameras, all the bathroom stuff (and a 12 pouch over the door shoe organizer to hang on the bathroom door and hold all the bathroom stuff).

Walkie talkies so we can stay in touch w/ whoever we're cruising with. A couple bottles of wine to share. His backpack and camelback, my tote bag, an empty dufflebag and an empty collapsable suitcase for souvinirs. (Last time we went to Ensenada we bought an enamelware bathroom sink, so you never know...) I have 4 lists on the computer, divided by category, of stuff we take. We usually have 5-6 suitcases for a week long cruise. Don't forget the shoes: flipflops for pooling, sandals for day wear, tennis shoes for hiking excursions, dress boots for evening for him, at LEAST 3 pairs of heels for me, and slippers. Shoes take half a bag by themselves. We may have more than we need (usually not) but we usually have whatever friends or family needs to borrow, and I'd rather have everything than run short. I do it just the opposite of pack everything and leave 1/2 home. I pack everything and add 1 more day outfit and 1 more evening outfit for each of us.

Happy Cruising.

You mentioned having a list. Is it anything you could share? This is my first cruise. I have packing for an AI down to a science but not for cruises.

Due to taking long trips on a motorcycle with DH - I know how to pack light. As in VERY light!

That being said, I've always thought I pack a lot for cruises. Well, after reading this thread, no more. OMG You guys amaze me!

On port days, I have port/excursion clothes and dinner/evening clothes - that's it - two sets of clothes for port days. On sea days, I have swimsuit with coverup, maybe casual hanging out clothes, and dinner/evening clothes - so two-three sets for sea days. I will take an extra couple evening tops, in case I don't want to stay in fancy duds. And yes, I do rewear shorts, capris, skirts, etc. DH washed our clothes once during our last two weeker, but we usually don't for just one week. Oh, and to repeat jessemon - "PJ's"????? lol

wow - I need to have dh look at the posts on this thread, so he can "get" that his wifey is really a light packer!

Cruise Diva has a packing list, but I'd like that "everything but the kitchen sink" list you have too, M&M. I need to build a packing list for us as subsequent ones have been eaten in reformatting HD.

I belong to the "if you wore it 1 hr. it isn't dirty" club. I reuse pieces. However, on our HAL cruise we had free laundry & dry cleaning, so I thought I'd utilize that and packed accordingly. They ironed and destroyed my favorite pair of shorts, leaving me without an item I needed to wear again. Therefore, if you pack very light planning on laundry to save you, make sure YOU do your laundry. They destroyed 2 items of mine, btw.

Everyone says NOT to overpack. I don't really think I did. I had many different blouse combos with one pair of jeans (which I didn't wear), two pairs of jean capris, and 5 pairs of shorts (one of which I didn't wear).

I usually put on what I plan to wear the whole day when I woke up and then got breakfast. But depending on what we did I changed clothes. If we swam, afterwards I put on a different outfit. Or if the weather was hotter than I expected I changed into something cooler and with thinner material.

And after dinner I changed into something else. Mostly a sleeve blouse and jean capris since it's cool on deck and cold in the casino, club, etc.

Hmmm

(1) Gymnasium in the am, shower in lockers and change into

(2) clothes for breakfast. eat breakfast go back to room and change into

(3) swim suit and cover of some kind. Stay in that pretty much rest of day until early afternoon

(4) back to cabin, shower, relax, etc.etc. Dress for

(5) dinner. After dinner get into something more comfortable

(6) something leisurely yet more than pajamas to go to clubs

That's it. 6 times. Never thought about it much.

For a 7 night cruise, I will pack workout outfits, sundresses for the day, cocktail/formal dresses for evening (I have a ton of them, and I like to get dressed up), and an after dinner "going out" type outfit. This also requires me to pack about 11 pair of shoes and 4 pair of flip flops (1 for each bathing suit). On my December Miracle cruise, my luggage weight came in at 50.5 pounds. They didn't charge me. On the way home, I just put an extra pair of shoes in my carry on. I've since bought some lightweight luggage, so I shouldn't have to worry about that half pound!

I try desperately not to overpack - not so much for the clothing options but to keep my suitcase under the general 50 lb airline limit! I have a packing list/spreadsheet - where I list what I am wearing each day - and try to STICK to it and not throw in anything extra.

I have also invested in the LIGHTEST luggage I can find - but without fail I have a luggage meltdown the night before leaving as I am generally a bit above the 50 lbs. I end up taking two pieces of luggage which I have to drag around - such a pain in the @#$#@ - wondering if it might be worth trying to pack everything into one and then just paying the surcharge (depending on how much it is!)

I thought I was an overpacker until I read this!!! I couldn't imagine changing clothes 6 times a day!

I dress in the am with bathing suit...cover up. That's it , till late afternoon....then shower and put my robe on ....relax and dress for dinner. Whatever I wear to dinner is what I wear the entire evening.

The only thing I might change is shoes...something more comfortable to walk around in.

On port days...we don't usually come back until late afternoon...and go straight to the room, shower, robe and room service. Then usually it's a nap as we're pretty much wiped out....then on to dinner.

I will pack an extra evening outfit and a few clean daytime shirts, in case.

And my suitcase is usually busting at the seams!!!!!

I usually take more and do laundry on long cruises. It's pretty hard to pack for a 14 day cruise and still be within the airlines regulations. Plus not many people have 14 pairs of underwear. :p

This made me laugh, because I went the entire month of May without doing laundry (cruise, business travel, a few weekend trips, just too darn busy). I have enough underwear I could have gone another 2-3 weeks without doing laundry!

Packing clothes is not where I overpack----it's the power cord, the small fan, laptop and movies to watch on the laptop, over the door organizer, can of cashews, bag of M & M's, books and magazines to read, door decorations, trinkets for the room steward, etc that gets me into trouble. Thank God for the Porters!! Only have to lug into the trunk to drive to port and they take it from there!! But I like to have all the comforts of home and then some when we cruise. I'm looking forward to Platinum so I can get laundry done for free!!

I dress once in the morning for the day. Swimsuit will go under my day clothes on shore. On the ship I might change into my swimsuit with a cover-up. I change before dinner for the evening. I bring one outfit for each day and one for each night. What I wear to the ship I wear off the ship. I have one 25" suitcase and everything has to fit in it - clothes, cosmetics, books, etc. If it doesn't fit, it doesn't go. I don't carry anything that doesn't fit in my purse.

Wow - changing clothes six times a DAY?!?! Coordinating flip flops for FOUR bathing suits?!!? Now I have to show this to DH to prove that I am definitely not an overpacker, LMAO!! I don't know where you guys find room for all this stuff!

Wait a minute..... coming from someone who packs 3 pairs of PJs!!! LMAO!! No wonder DH is grumpy!! :D I pack jammies, but they are from VS, so they don't take up a lot of room.

So let's see:

1. Morning - put on swimsuit and shorts/shirt. This goes for sea days and port days.

2. Dinner - I always dress up for dinner

3. Evening - capris/jeans and a top

4. Late Evening - aforementioned pjs. :D

So I guess I change 4 times a day.

I'm the 4 bathing suit poster. I don't see the big deal. That takes up the least amount of space and weigh nothing. I have different ones for different activities, ie coverage:) :) And, there is nothing worse than putting on a wet bathing suit. I'll sometimes wear 2 a day...in port in the morning, come back and shower to go shop or whatever, then change back into a bathing suit when I get back on the ship and hang out in the hottub. They won't be dry the next day, so I need to have backup!

7 day cruise

2 cocktail dresses

5 pairs of capris/skirts

5 tops to match those capris/skirts

8 pairs of shorts

8 t-shirts

2 sets of PJs

14 sets of underclothes

1 extra something - could be a dress that would push a set of capris to pool/port daywear.

2 bathing suits - wear one while one is drying after it's washed

I belong to the "If you've worn it for an hour it's dirty" club. This includes a shorts outfit to wear off the boat. I usually come home with one clean outfit.

I think I'm starting to see a dichotomy of thinking here, with postings like "8 pairs of shorts, 8 t-shirts". I'll bet you think that's 8 outfits, don't you? For me, that would be 64 -- each shirt with each pair of shorts!:

So, for me, it's more like 3 shorts and 3 accompanying shirts = more than enough outfits (with a laundry day) for a different casual pairing every day.

When my sister was young and first married, they both worked and they would go a month or so without doing laundry, and would buy new clothes as the month went on. Personally, if I go more than 3 days without doing laundry it takes me all day long to catch up. Of course, I do have 5 kids. :p

LOL, I know Meredith wasn't referring to 4 bathing suits... I think she was referring to coordinating flip flops for all of them :p I have to say, that caught me by surprise too... I might take 6 bathing suits... but they each get the same pair of rainbows, LOL... but hey, to each their own. I do take WAY too many shoes (10-12 pair), but more for the evening (dinners and disco).... I just can't ever predict how bad my feet are going to hurt so I usually bring many choices (I have plantar fascitis, so my feet are unpredictable)

90% of the time, I have to pay the extra fee for my overweight luggage... it's become a fact of life. Although, I have started doing better with getting it between 49-56 lbs... I have actually gotten better about packing. The last two cruises, I have done WAY better... and last time, I only took 8 pairs of shoes I think (okay, it was a 5 day cruise but still :p)
