15,000 Cruisers In Cayman On The Same Day!!!

I just stumbled upon a site that said how many cruise ships would be in port the same day. The day we are in Grand Cayman there are 5 ships totaling about 15,000 people. Is this the norm. or should I book my excursions asap?? We wanted to go on the waverunners w/ Island Marketing to Stingray City

I just stumbled upon a site that said how many cruise ships would be in port the same day. The day we are in Grand Cayman there are 5 ships totaling about 15,000 people. The next time we went we kept an eye on cruise cal to make sure there were not as many .....

To me the worst part with that many ships is the tendering....it takes forever! We waited in line for a return to the ship for over an hour in the hot sun. Once on the island we got out of the port area right away and the crowds dispersed and weren't bad at all.

Thanks for all your responses, I personally would stay on the ship because I've already been to the Island with a bunch of Girl Friends 4 yrs. ago. But my DH has never been & would love to do the waverunners and see the stingrays, I'll try to be off the ship asap in the A.M. and maybe if we try to come back earlier. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Thanks again

I was there on a very crowded day as well. The traffic is horrible on the way back to the ship from the excursion--leave enough time to get back. Other than that, definitely go see the stingrays--its always a great experience.

Any suggestions on getting an early tender ticket? Where do they normally have you go to get this? We'll be on the Liberty, any secrets would be greatly appreciated. So much for a relaxing day in the Cayman's, I'm sure once we make it off the ship we'll be fine. I'll just have to have a few frozen drinks for the wait in line on the way back ;)

We'll make the best of it, it's so beautiful there.

Some excursions get preferential treatment (those booked thru Carnival ) based on what all is involved in the outing , distance etc... .

Generally staff is set up somewhere onboard with tender tickets to distribute .

As to getting tender tickets, be sure to read the capers the night before to find out where to meet to get your tender tickets. You need to have your whole group with you. Get there as early as you can. It is on a first-come first-serve basis. If you have booked an excursion with the ship, you will meet at a specified place and they will take you to the tender as a group.

I can't promise that this will work on the Liberty but you can try. When we were on the Miracle and had early, independently booked excursions we just went down to wherever the the Carnival tours were boarding and told the crew members that were working there that we had early, private tours and they said fine and told us to go ahead and board the tenders. Like I said, it might not work but it can't hurt to try.

On the Valor in May we picked up tender tickets on level 5 by the casino. We had to wait above level 3 steps, but once they had cleared all the early carnival booked excursions then we were able to catch the tender.

 

We just planned that extra step as part of our day. Also if you are going out on your own try to come back to ship a little early and the line to get back isn't too bad.

We were on The Conquest last week, and we have friends in the Cayman Islands that arrange our excursions. There were 30 of us. Just get to the lounge or wherever tender tickets are distributed, with everyone there and tell them you need to be together. They tore off a whole sheet for us to tender together. We have done this 3 times, and we have always been on the first tender. We were at port area by tender by 7:30 A.M. Grand Cayman was very busy in port that day, in the Rum Cake factory you could barely move. Plenty of room every where else. Jimmy Buffet's is very nice as is the new shopping area around it.

I don't think 5 ships in port is GC at it's busiest....I think I've heard of it getting 7 or 8 in the winter months.....yet, once you get out to what you're going to do, it's fine. I always pick beaches and excursions away from the crowds, and I've never had a problem. I think the most crowded it gets is waiting for a tender back onto the boat....I have seen some lines that were HUGE!

This got me wondering about number of ships in Cayman next May when we cruise on the Legend... according to cruise cal, the Legend is the only ship stopping at GC that day. Woo Hoo! I know that can change and most of you don't care but I'm psyched. Also, we gotta hope the weather cooperates and we actually get to stop this time.

we were twice there in winter did not leave the ship till around 10.30 easy. coming back we always are some of the last on the victory we had about 20 minutes to go before the ship was due to leave and joined a huge line which only got longer but when you have crew still in port you will always make it

That means these are third of EVERYONE already on the island.

 

Or 25% of the population if everyone disembarks!

Not all ships are the same size either so it may not be close to 15,000. On the other hand if two of them are the FOS and LOS :eek::eek::eek:

So I had to go check and there are 4 when we're there on the Liberty and one of the is LOS - ruh, roh :eek:
