islahopper Posted June 24, 2007 #1 Share Posted June 24, 2007 I was in a fine dining resterant yesterday and it was dress down day for a local charity. The employees make a donation to the charity and are allowed to wear shorts or jeans for the day. The service was fast and friendly and the meal was great. At no time did the employees dress affect my enjoyment of my meal. How many of you would have your cruise ruined if CCL did this onboard? It would not bother me at all, and no the resterant was not Burger King. Anyway, just food for thought. Have a great day.
DisneyNutMary Posted June 24, 2007 #2 Share Posted June 24, 2007 I wouldn't bother me at all if it was being done for charity. I would probably make a donation too. The person serving the food and drink is the same no matter what they wear, so not big deal- uniform or shorts.
mrdood Posted June 24, 2007 #3 Share Posted June 24, 2007 The jeans argument has been beaten to death  , yes there are people for whom the ambience would have been ruined, or so they claim...
MrPete Posted June 24, 2007 #4 Share Posted June 24, 2007 Did they sprinkle empty peanut shells on the marble floors?
islahopper Posted June 24, 2007 Author #5 Share Posted June 24, 2007 They had to stop the peanuts because someone slipped on a shell and sued them.
Cotton Posted June 24, 2007 #6 Share Posted June 24, 2007 Geez. I've seen many restaurants do the charity thing....but that is an inane thought for a cruise ship.
hdawson Posted June 24, 2007 #7 Share Posted June 24, 2007 I would feel disappointed if I was taking my girl or wife out for a "special evening". It's not Hooters. Cotton. I don't think I've asked this before, but did you know Willie Colhn who was a chef in NO about thirty years ago? His wife's name was Gerta and they had a cute little restaurant in Gretna on the west bank. Fantastic food.
MrPete Posted June 24, 2007 #8 Share Posted June 24, 2007 Cotton... Your 2007 roster for cruising seems to be a bit dry. We are almost at the half year mark. Get crackin' ! :p
Cotton Posted June 24, 2007 #9 Share Posted June 24, 2007 HDawson - Yes, I did know the family. Great folks, great food.:) Pete - You have no idea HOW close the next one is.....will report soon.;)
hdawson Posted June 24, 2007 #10 Share Posted June 24, 2007 Cotton. Any idea what happened to them and where they are? I remember his favorite day off was on a boat fishing and chowing down on Popeye's fried chicken. LOL They used to join us after closing and drinking Jaegermeister. Of course that was a long, long time ago.
victory2020 Posted June 24, 2007 #11 Share Posted June 24, 2007 There was a restaurant in our area in the 80's where the waiters wore shorts & to me, looking at all the leg hair(Could it possibly get into my food??????) was a little disgusting. We didn't go back - & they're no longer in business.
Sargent_Schultz Posted June 24, 2007 #12 Share Posted June 24, 2007 If you took your wife AND girlfriend out, it would indeed be a "special occasion". It is Willy Coln.
hdawson Posted June 24, 2007 #13 Share Posted June 24, 2007 Sgt. Thanks for the correction. Any idea what has happened to them? I remember seeing him do a couple of cooking shows on NPR years ago.

However, on a cruise ship it isn't the norm. On deck, the drink waiters are in shorts and that doesn't bother me, BUT when they advertise the "fancy" dining room I expect the waiters to be dressed for the surroundings. the_dylaness Posted June 24, 2007 #16 Share Posted June 24, 2007 A few months ago DH & I went to try the "newest, chicest, supposedly most delicious and wonderful" restaurant in town. While I won't review the whole experience (very bad) I can't help but always remember that one of the weirdest things I saw there that night was that although most of the patrons were appropriately dressed (cocktail dresses on ladies, jacket and tie for guys), the waiters were wearing raggedy looking golf shirts, jeans, and white sneakers. It really made an impression on me and not one that was good. I mean, at a place that two people can EASILY drop upwards of $100 just on food, I expect my waiter to look like a waiter, not a gas station attendant. Sargent_Schultz Posted June 24, 2007 #17 Share Posted June 24, 2007 Willy was chef at the Veranda restaurant in the InterContinental Hotel before Katrina. The Veranda restaurant reopened after Katrina, but I don't know if he is still associated with it. I'll see if I can find out more.
hdawson Posted June 24, 2007 #18 Share Posted June 24, 2007 Thanks. I enjoyed his food and their company many nights many years ago. Also I've lost his Bahamian Stew (fish) recipe. LOL
Sargent_Schultz Posted July 2, 2007 #19 Share Posted July 2, 2007 Willy Coln retired from the Inter-Continental the spring of 2005. He stays retired.
dms_cruisers04 Posted July 2, 2007 #20 Share Posted July 2, 2007 Although this could have just as easily been added to the unscientific "Poll" thread, I'll go with it anyway. Islahopper, if it hadn't been for charity and you went into that "fine dining restaurant" and the wait staff was in shorts/jeans would you have had the same reaction? dorisday Posted July 2, 2007 #22 Share Posted July 2, 2007 We had a "Crew Uniform Swop" party onboard the original Island Princess to raise money for a orphanage in Puerto Rica The crew had to make a donation to attend & wear the uniform of someone from a different department & the opposite sex Seeing the officers dressed up as salon girls & waiters as cabin stewardess was hilarious. It was the best crew party I every attended. Even the Captain made a very brief appearance dressed as the Social Hostess  Disclaimer - No passengers were harmed during the course of the party & no ones cruise was ruined as a result ;) ;)
river_sand_bar2 Posted July 2, 2007 #23 Share Posted July 2, 2007 For ALL to know.... My buddy just got back on Saturday off the Elation... the capers read as follows: The suggested attire for this evening is "Casual" Please no shorts or beach wear to be worn to dinner. At no where on the capers does it say ANYTHING about jeans... just shorts and beach wear. And for Formal night this is how it reads: Proper attire requested. No shorts or beach wear PLEASE! islahopper Posted July 3, 2007 Author #24 Share Posted July 3, 2007 I never care what wait staff or any other person is wearing in a resterant, I do care about the quality of the food.
Ephraim Posted July 3, 2007 #25 Share Posted July 3, 2007 Congrats to the OP who has decided to revive an old subject once again. Stick your knife in and have a twist. This discussion isn't going to end the argument. It's just more bytes wasted. How about a real and constructive discussion instead of beating an old horse just for the sake of it? Let's rank this on a scale of 0 (unimportant, ie the colour of the gum on the bottom of my shoe) to 5 (important, ie troops being killed in Afghanistan), I'm going to rank this discussion a 0.
