New York For A First Timer...

Actually it was about 8:30 when we got to Rockefeller Center and we weren't sure they were filming since it was Saturday. Then we heard they would be there until 9:00 so we walked over and got right in with the group. I think there was only one row of people between the newscaster and us. Maybe it's not as busy on Saturday as other days of the week. We were pleasantly surprised.

And don't forget to go to Top of the Rock. We went up around 9:00 and no lines. Nearly had the place to ourselves.

Oh yes, on our walk to St. Patrick's that morning we saw a line of 38 police cars - all with red lights but no sirens and not in a hurry. We were told later that it was some type of drill. Anyone with more info? It was quite a sight.

Kansas Lady, the line of police cars in NYC is a type of drill called a surge...you can see a small one here

We saw several larger ones while there last year and they are quite impressive to those of us who don't see things like this regularly. We were told it is a reminder that NYPD is on alert and ready in case of emergency and also to let people know they're there both as security and as a deterrent to crime. This was begun after 9-11 as a counter terrorism exercise to show the presence of NYPD.

For a more accurate description see this CBS story

I always thought it was a way to get many police to someplace quickly....so they wouldn't have to come to one central spot to be bused someplace. they practice this all the time. I see about one a week....its quite impressive...

Except when you are trying to get to work and traffic gets snarled.

You know, this is kind of funny. Not to pick on you Zone but your reply (post #2 on this thread) was a little nasty and now look, over 350 posts on this thread.

I haven't read every page here so please excuse me if I duplicate a question.

My son and 2-3 friends (21 y/o)will be in New York Dec. 30-Jan7th. What about Hostel? College type? are they safe? any suggestions?

Thanks a bunch!

They are generally safe. The hostels web page lists those that have problems. Have them have as little valuables on them as possible....

Staying outside NYC is not a great idea - many of the areas you are looking at are just not in good neighborhoods. In NYC, you get what you pay for.

Did you look at the Pod Hotel in Manhattan?

http://www.thepodhotelny.com

We just booked my son and his friend in the Pod hotel. The site looked exactly like what they were looking for. Anymore info he should now about the area?

Thanks sooooooo much for the info!

HELLO EVERYONE...

We are looking for a good Bar with Happy Hour to spend and afternoon...also with good appetizers.

Please let me know your opinions.;)

Joseph, you might as well start a whole new thread with this question. :D

On every block you will find many bars. What neighborhood are you looking at and what type of bar? Trendy? Irish Pub? Older crowd? Collegy crowd? Sports bar? I set up monthly happy hours so I can definitely help you out here but I need to know a little more about what you are looking for.

The East Village has great bars for happy hour that have a young crowd. Here are some suggestions:

Professor Thom's

Crocodile Lounge (free pizza)

The Lower East Side also has happy hours with a young crowd.

Boss Tweed's

Lucky Jack's

There are so many more places to suggest. I recommend looking up Citysearch (New York City)- bars and nightlife. The neighborhoods I suggest are East Village, Greenwich Village, The West Village, The Lower East Side, and The Upper East Side (last choice as so far from other areas). Those are the neighborhoods that will get the younger collegy crowds. If you have questions about certain bars, feel free to ask. Also look up Shecky's (New York) for those same neighborhoods. Go to advanced search and you can pick what you are looking for.

Shecky's is easier to navigate than CitySearch. I find places on Shecky's, then look them up on CitySearch to read user reviews and get the official websites.

I find amazing spot´s to hang out in shecky´s and also in Citysearch...

Thank you for all the Info...:)

How Hard Is The Subway Transportation From Jfk To Manhattan... (how Good Is The Service In This Subway Blue Line: Ac)

And Also From Jfk To Nearest Subway Station In Red Hook Cruise Terminal In Brooklyn...

Thanks.:) :) :)

The subway service from JFK is not good. Its long and slow and sometimes spotty(especially during non-rush hours).....as you point out is the A and C lines. Its about an hour to Manhattan once you are on the subway to Manhattan and about the same to Red Hook. As I have pointed out its a long walk to the cruise terminal from the closest subway Stop Smith and 9th Street although you can take the 75 bus at the base of this 88 foot off the street station but even then you get off at pioneer street and its still a walk. You take the A and the C train to the Hoyt schermhorn stop and change across the Platform(no need to walk up stairs) for the G train that terminates at Smith and 9th Street. If you absolutely have to do this get off at either Carroll Street or Bergen Street and take a cab for under $10.00 to the cruise terminal...BTW I live off the Bergen Street stop...

How is the J,Z SUBWAY LINE. Is that more efficient to get into Manhattan?

If that line is more efficient than the Blue A,C Line, i will change stations in the Broadway Junction station...

What do you think?
