I had a great time in San Francisco! Did have some delicious lunches and dinners but had NO desserts and had low-cal breakfasts. DD and I also walked/hiked 8-10 miles a day. My weigh-in is tomorrow and if I stay the same I'll be happy but if I lose something that'll be even better. Congrats to the losers this week, you all are doing SO great! :) Welcome to our group Kristina! I'm a good deal older than you but when I started exercising I began with walking. Now I go to the gym 4-5 days a week doing biking, treadmill and weight machines. I'm sure that you will find something that works for you. :D

Welcome Kristina- There is nothing like good old fashioned walking. You only need a pair of shoes:p and some clothes of course:D I try all kinds of videos and going to the gym, but walking is my favorite! I guess it's like the accidental exersize not the on purpose exersize. I mean, you have to walk to get from point A to point B, but you don't do weights unless you do it on pupose. When you find what you like, just make a time that works for you. Ohhhhh to be 22 again, I would make some better chases if I could do it again....good for you to "nip it in the bud" while you are still young:cool: We call that "Barney Fife management"...lol.

 

RB and Pat, way to go. I hope to just stay the same this week since I have had one h@## of a time at work, I haven't made the best choices this week.

Well I'm at the end of my first week, and I fell on and off the wagon so many times (already:eek: ). I did manage to lose though, so I've added my stats to your list. I'm down 3 pounds!! Today was DH's birthday, so we went out for dinner. I couldn't pass up desert cause I figured that I've got 6 more days to be good;) .

Great start, Carmen!

 

Kristina, to answer your earlier question about starting exercise, I would agree that walking is the best thing to start. After I had spent about a month increasing the length and intensity of my walking, I started to add some running. The Couch to 5k plan is a very popular way to ease into running.

 

If you have access to a gym, then a whole other world of opportunities is opened up. I'd invest in some light weight dumbbells and start working in some weight training, too. Weight machines at a gym would be better.

 

The point is that you want to do a combination of aerobic exercise (like walking, running, treadmill, elliptical, bicycling,) to improve your heart and lungs and strength training in order to build up lean muscle mass (to increase your base metabolism and to tone). Adding stretching & flexibility is a good thing, too.

Sounds to me like you handled that great - you combined exercise and moderation and still enjoyed your meals. That is a terrific approach to a trip. I hope you're rewarded at WI!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and the answers. I belong to a gym now, it's just my extremely busy schedule that keeps me from going :) But I'm going to start now! Thanks for the tips on walkink! (I walked home from the gym 2 days ago its about 3 miles not because i wanted to but because i locked my keys in the car :eek::D)

I agree with RB that light weights are good, but I respectfully disagree that weights at the gym are "better". ;) :)

 

I started a program called Buff Brides 14 weeks ago and I think it has been the main force behind the way my body has changed. Yes, I've been eating better, but have been getting about the same cardio as I did before I started (I'm fairly active).

 

With Buff Brides, you use handweights, an exercise ball, and ankle weights for exercises such as curls, tricep extensions, sit-ups, lunges, etc. It's a 24 week plan and everything is laid out for you, (number of reps, sets, and order of the exercises). I do it while I watch TV. :D It's definitely NOT just for brides, but could be used for any occasion one is "counting down" to, or just to get in shape in general. Although, it is probably geared more towards women than men.

 

Just wanted to add in that you don't neccessarily need to join a gym or do machine exercises to get results. Also, the author of the book discusses how machines actually let you "cheat" a little bit. For example, if you are doing an overhead press, with a machine you use both hands to lift one bar, so if your right arm is stronger than your left, it continues to be stronger. With hand weights, both arms have to work equally as hard. They don't have a choice - they both have to lift their own individual dumb bell!

I was happy with a .2 pound loss at weigh in today. I have never lost weight on a vacation before! I guess that goes to show you that one can have a good time and it not be all about eating!

Good Morning.....

Thanks to all your encouragement and ideas for losing while you cruise...I am happy to report a 1 pound loss after a 5-day cruise... ;) That is a first for me....and while not losing a lot...it was NOT a gain....And I still had a great time and enjoyed eating some things I ordinarily wouldn't try.....

Here's a challenge - take your current weight and subtract 10% - that is your "goal" to reach in the next 4 months. Unless you weigh much more than 250 lbs, that should be achievable at a healthy rate of loss of 1-2 lbs/week. Join in at any time, and post your progress each week, either as your weight or as a running percentage lost. Who wants to give it a shot?

 

OK, I'm in...223 lbs/6'1". Going on cruise February 8, 2008. 23lbs by then...will post my progress every Sunday evening, up or down! Need to exercise, hate to exercise :( Gonna give it all I got! Thanks everyone!

Cherie~Thanks, I actually went out yesterday and bought a treadmill, and I used it :eek: I'm going to get this weight off yet.

 

Donna~ Good to see you here, you can do it. I hate exercising also it has taken me a year to get past the just go for walk stages. I like what's happening to my body but I still hate to exercise.:D

Great job Swansonia and SeaFan! It's so hard to lose weight while we are away from our normal routines. We're proud of you!

 

I only lost 0.8 pounds this week, but I'll take it! We've been so busy with wedding stuff that I haven't had much time to work out. Been trying to work walking more into my daily routine, but I honestly don't feel like walking gives me a good workout. I don't feel as if I've accomplished anything unless I sweat! :D (I know that's not true, though. :o)
