Boston on Labor Day

Hi all! Thought you locals could help with a question. We will be stopping in Boston on Labor Day '07. We were planning on doing our own thing. Since our stop falls on a holiday, will this make it better or worse? Should there be less traffic since no work, or does Boston have a big Labor Day celebration that could cause us some difficulty? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Labor day is pretty hectic in the city due to the fact that Boston is a BIG college town and there is a huge influx of people coming into the city to start school around then. I know because I'll be one of them bringing a child back to school that weekend.

There isn't any big festival per se but a lot of people will be hanging out in Harvard Square and it is definitely a fun place to be! It has a festival atmosphere.

The areas that will be most hectic will be the neighborhoods close to the colleges. These are primarily residential neighborhoods and won't have much of an impact on places like the North End, Quincy Market/Fanueil Hall or the Freedom Trail.

That's true but I have noticed in the last few years that a lot of the schools are having a welcome weekend for parents in conjuction with "the big return" and they city is crawling with peeps at all of the popular tourist places. Not too busy to enjoy them all though! DD's school offers a ton school sponsored different packages to all of the usual tourist destinations and several of them show up online as sold out! Boston can handle it though.:)
