A little something different to do in Rhodes

Rhodes has a traditional Turkish bath (a hammam) available for just a few euros. This is a very off-the-tourist-path experience indeed. It involves being bathed and scrubbed and massaged by a bath attendant in a 7th century Byzantine structure.

I could say it was the ouzo I’d had that morning in Rhodes Greece that led me to to the steaming room I found myself in, crouched stark naked on a stool while a woman threw bowls of hot water over me. But the ouzo, the stiff national Greek drink, had worn off when I consumed my big fat Greek lunch an hour earlier. So it wasn’t the ouzo. How did I, then, one of the most modest (even by our relatively prudish American standards) end up lying on a marble slab in a 7th-century Byzantine structure while a stranger soaped, scrubbed and rinsed me — while my good friend perched nearby on her own naked stool?

This is a great post! You are my kind of traveler! We did the sightseeing route on our cruise, because we hadn't been to these places before. But it would be great to go back, and do more swimming, and do things such as the turkish bath! And drink more ouzo....

This has me thoroughly intrigued. We will be going to Rhodes in

Sept. We like to try new things. My husband would like to know

if he did it would he have a male or female attendant? If we're

wandering the streets of Rhodes will we come across a place

to have this done?

Hi Cat. The men's and women's areas are separate -- you'll have a female attendant and your husband will have a male.

There is only the on that I know of, in Plateia Arionos, between a large old mosque and the Folk Dance Theater. Frommer's has some more info including opening hours. Be aware that the attendants are not likely to speak English. (But the man at the desk does and he is very helpful.)

 

It is definitely a unique experience! Do let us know if you go.

I emailed my private tour guide (Ekoltravel) and asked about

having a hamam while in Kusadasi. She said there is one near

the port and they would be happy to take us there. But.....

my attendant would be a woman and my husbands attendant

would be a guy. Unfortunately, that's a deal breaker for him.

It was a stretch to convince him in the first place, now there's

no way he's going to let a man touch him. But, he agreed to

wait for me if I wanted to check it out.

We're in Rhodes the next day. Maybe I'll do it twice:)
