StephNCalifornia Posted May 11, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 11, 2004 I don't know what's the best option, renting a car in Skagway or doing the White Pass Railway tour. Would it be too redundant to do both? Please help!!
Budget Queen Posted May 12, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 12, 2004 I've done both- many times. On a single trip- consider your priorities. The White Pass RR is significant for scenery (superior from the rail at the summit), engineering, history. For some people this isn't a strong interest. Renting a car is certainly a cheaper option and allows you to cover plenty of ground. Either way be certain to head to the Park Service visitor center- loaded with activities and information that will enhance you touring. Located at Broadway and Second. CruiseIsGood Posted May 12, 2004 #3 Share Posted May 12, 2004 I'd prefer the narrated train for a first-time visit, simply because pointing at a gigantic slab of granite and going, "oh", doesn't compare to hearing that the only two men who died building those tracks are squished underneath that gigantic slab of granite. Ok, that's gross, but you get the picture. The historical value of a lot of that area is lost exploring it on your own. I enjoyed the narration. More the first time than the second (second had no sense of humor), but still, just driving it, I wouldn't have had an understanding of what went into that incredible adventure.
