judy158 Posted May 11, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 11, 2004 What are the trails like ontop of MT Roberts? I don't plan on hiking up or down the mountain. Would I be better off doing the 3 hr east hike at the Mendenhall Glacier? Also, a silly question ,but do peop;e wear the disposable rain ponchos in port? I was debating taking one (worn in Disney and it did keep me dry) or my gore tex jacket that folds into its pocket. I told you that it was a silly question! Budget Queen Posted May 12, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 12, 2004 No silly questions here. Yes I wear ponchos if it is raining. Both enjoyable, but I give an edge to Mendenhall for the added look at the glacier. tinydancer21 Posted May 12, 2004 #3 Share Posted May 12, 2004 The Mt. Roberts hike is good, it's a real hike though so wear proper hiking shoes and it can be slippery because it rains a lot in Juneau. My grandparents live in Juneau and my mom was raised there, when we were little she took us up Mt. Roberts (this was long before the tram and resturant at the top, that's pretty new), she forgot to pack water though so we were so thirsty by the time we got to the cross! haha That memory sort of over shadows everthing else! haha It's a great view from the top though, I'd recommend it. Lots of people hike up to see the fourth of July fireworks display they have in the channel. bayman Posted May 12, 2004 #4 Share Posted May 12, 2004 Where do the hikes go to,and are they hikes or walks? Is it open alpine meadow or thick forest? We would also take the tram up ,but would like to spend some time at the top if it makes sense. Thanks
tinydancer21 Posted May 12, 2004 #5 Share Posted May 12, 2004 If you hike up Mt. Roberts it's a pretty good incline, nothing you'll need ropes or anything for but it's a work out. It's a wooded trail. Lots of really big trees all around. Juneau is built at the foot of Mt. Roberts, the whole town is up hill.
