Is Verizon Wireless service available in Whittier, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Juneau?

Can I use my wireless phone in the ports for the Alaska inside passage route? I have domestic calling and domestic roaming on my account.

you should be good- in Juneau- I can use my cell service "south"- and they often hook my calls through Verizon- would check with them though. rlb

We had no problem with Verizon in any of these ports...and that was in 2001. You should be just fine.

I had no problem in any of those ports, but don't know what your plan covers; you may have roaming charges. Call Verizon and they can answer specific questions to your account.

I called earlier this year. Should work fine. CS said it would. I remember using it for sure in Juneau. I think it worked in Ketchikan too. Anchorage for sure. I'm not sure if we bothered trying in Skagway.

 

The only thing to remember is Vancouver is extra cost roaming so if you stop there, try not to use it. Text messaging is the same rate as in the US so if in Vancouver, texting might be cheaper than calling.

We were there in May this year and each of the ports you listed our Verizon worked fine.

you shoukd check their website, http://www.verizonwireless.com for your plan. they show coverage around this cities and surrounding area. depending on the ship you sail, many now have cell coverage but at international roaming rat

In May Verizon worked in all three ports with no extra charges. Just make sure your phone says extended network and not roaming.

just returned and had service in all ports through verizon and even on the ship for some distance when leaving and arriving in ports. just be sure to update your phone (*228) and check on your plan

I just returned from AK 2 weeks ago. I just called Verizon today to make sure we weren't charged for any of my calls. We were NOT. Skagway too. We were even able to call while in the Straits of Juan de Fuca (halfway between US and Candada border). No charge. One side of the ship said 'roaming'. The other was not. Anyway, no extra charges. Just make sure it doesn't say 'roaming' when you dial.

The last couple of cruises we have been on, the ship had its own cell phone network that billed through your own phone network as roaming. Make sure you are away from the ship when you call.

I had service at all alaska ports i went.. too bad though, they didn't convince Apple to supply iPhone on their network.

i brought both my verizon cellphone and verizon notebook internet card. both worked beautifull everywhere, including the whole trainride from denali to whittier and on the cruise ship as we got close to ports and leaving ports. Once you hit Canada, your phone will work constantly. you just have to pay the surcharges for using "international" mins.

Just returned last week and I have an At&T (cingular) nationwide plan. I had full coverage in Ketchican, Juneau, Skagway, McKinley Princes Lodge, Denali Princess Lodge, and Fairbanks.
